BREMERTON, Wash. (EMUEagles.com) – The Pacific Northwest is best known for its rainy weather conditions and Thursday's opening round of the 2010 NCAA West Regional Championships proved that statement to again be true. The Eastern Michigan University men's golf and the rest of the field waited out a 90-minute weather delay at the start of the tournament before taking to the course.

Once they got there, the Eagles shot a 303 to finish the opening day in ninth place at the par 72, 7,104-yard Gold Mountain Golf Club. Host Washington showed that home course familiarity would play a big part in first round success, as the Huskies shot a collective two-under-par 286 and the only team to finish under par on the day. Colorado State and Oregon State were tied for second behind Washington at 291. Illinois was fourth at five-over, followed by San Diego at six-over. USC was the only other team under double-digits over par at nine-over.

Teams finishing in the top five of the final standings at the 2010 NCAA Regional Championships will earn the right to compete in the field at the 2010 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships slated for June 1-6 at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Tied atop the individual leader board, Colorado State's Dustin Moore and Denver's Espen Kofstad each shot a three-under 69.

Senior Marty Jeppesen (Saline, Mich.-Saline) turned in a round of one-over, 73 to lead the Green and White in a tie for 15th place. Classmate Cam Burke (Baden, Ontario-Waterloo Secondary) added a 74 for 24th place followed by Brandon Lemons (Portage, Mich.-Portage Central) in 41st place with a 76. Redshirt junior Brad Larente (Cambridge, Ontario-Hespeler Secondary) and junior Nick Carbary (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Mattawan) rounded out the lineup with an 80 and an 82, respectively.

Head coach Bruce Cunningham and the Eagles will look to continue the momentum Friday, May 21, in second round action at the Olympic Course. The Green and White's first tee time of the day is scheduled for 8 a.m. PST on the 10th hole. Live scoring for the NCAA West Regional is available online at www.golfstat.com. Links to the live scoring will be available on the EMU men's golf page on the official athletics site of the Eagles, www.EMUEagles.com.
