YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped game two of a three-game set versus the University of Toledo Rockets Saturday afternoon, May 15, at Oestrike Stadium, as the Eagles came up short, 5-2.
EMU drops to 25-26 overall and 13-10 in the Mid-American Conference, while UT improves to 30-19 (15-7 MAC) with the win.
Sophomore Kendall Lewis (Huntsville, Ohio-Indian Lake) suffered his first loss since March 14 and his first loss of the season in MAC play for the Eagles, despite carrying a perfect game for six innings. Lewis (6-3) went seven and one-thirds innings, giving up five runs (two earned) on five hits, while striking out two batters.
Eastern Michigan threatened to plate the game's first run in the bottom of fifth, loading the bases with just one out. However, Toledo's Mike Hamann managed to get the next two outs of the inning without any damage to keep the game a scoreless tie.
But the Eagles redeemed themselves an inning later, as a squeeze bunt by freshman Daniel Russell (Grandville, Mich.-Grandville) plated sophomore Brent Ohrman (Adrian, Mich.-Adrian), who doubled and reached third on a passed ball earlier in the inning, to give EMU a 1-0 advantage.
But the lead would be short-lived for the Eagles, as the Rockets capitalized on an EMU error in the top of the seventh to plate three runs, including a two-run homer by Aaron Dudley to break up Lewis' no-hitter, to make it a 3-1 game.
EMU made it a one-run game in the bottom half of the inning, as a sacrifice fly to center field by senior Todd Graves (St, Marys, Ohio-St. Marys Memorial) plated sophomore Wally Gerbus (Fairfield, Ohio-Stephen T. Baden) to make it a 3-2 game.
But the Rockets again had an answer, as a two-run single to the wall in right field by Jared Hoying gave Toledo a 5-2 advantage in the top of the eighth inning, one they would not relinquish down the stretch.
Tomorrow's series finale and Senior Day is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. at Oestrike Stadium.
