EMU sophomore Sarah Gerber earns second career honor after stellar week at the plate
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University sophomore catcher Sarah Gerber has been named Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday, May 11.
The award is the first for an Eagle this season and the second career honor for Gerber who notched her first conference accolade March 24, 2009, during her freshman season.
The native of North Canton, Ohio concluded the 2010 campaign by extending her season long hitting streak to 11 games. Last week alone she hit .563 (9-for-16) with 11 RBIs and at least one run driven in in each of the team's final five contests. She drove in a season-high four runs in a 7-7 tie against Western Michigan before going 3-for-3 at the dish with two RBIs, a walk and a run scored in the season finale against Northern Illinois.
In addition to her offense, the Eagle backstop didn't commit a single error in 26 chances behind the plate. EMU came up just short of a MAC Tournament appearance despite sweeping the Huskies in the season's final two-game set at Varsity Field last weekend. Gerber's impressive week brought her season batting average to .301, improving last year's mark by nearly 30 points.
