YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – A back and forth battle ended in Eastern Michigan University's favor Saturday afternoon, April 3, at Oestrike Stadium, as a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth by junior Bo Kinder (Wapella, Ill.-Clinton Community-Kaskaskia C.C.) helped the Eagles claim a 9-8 victory over Bowling Green State University.
EMU improves to 12-15 overall and 4-1 in the Mid-American Conference, while BGSU falls to 7-14-1 (1-4 MAC) with the loss.
After the Falcons reclaimed a two-run lead in the ninth to go ahead, 8-6, the Eagles mounted a late comeback for the second game in-a-row. Senior Andrew Marshall (Mason, Mich.-Mason) pulled the Eagles within a run, as his towering solo home run to dead center limited Bowling Green to an 8-7 advantage. Marshall finished the contest 2-for-5 with one run scored and one RBI.
From there, a single by junior Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley) and a hit batsman on junior Matt Skirving (Midland, Mich.-H.H. Dow) by BGSU's Patrick O'Brien set the stage for Wally Gerbus (Fairfield, Ohio-Stephen T. Baden). Gerbus singled to score pinch runner Brent Ohrman (Adrian, Mich.-Adrian) and knot the game at 8-8 and pave the way for Kinder, who belted O'Brien's first offering through the ride side to score the game winning run.
Kinder had a stellar day at the plate, finishing 3-for-6 with a home run, one run scored, and two RBI.
A day following his heroics in game one versus BGSU, Skirving finished 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI in the game two victory. Along with Kinder, Leonard also collected three hits in the win.
Freshman reliever Taylor Dimmerling (Perrysburg, Ohio-Perrysburg) picked up the win for EMU, while Charles Wooten took the loss for the Falcons.
The Eagles out-hit the Falcons, 18-9, in the win, but EMU was held scoreless until a five-run bottom of the sixth inning made it a 5-5 game.
Tomorrow, the Eagles have the opportunity to sweep a MAC opponent for the first time since the 2008 season, as sophomore left hander Collin Taylor (Cincinnati, Ohio-Lakota West) gets the nod for the Eagles opposite the Falcons' Kevin Leady. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at Oestrike Stadium.
