Senior earns his third career weekly conference accolade
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University senior golfer Cam Burke (Baden, Ontario-Waterloo Secondary) was named Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Week for the period ending April 14, 2010. This marks the third time in his career he has collected the weekly award.
Burke paced the Green and White at the 41st Annual Robert Kepler Intercollegiate, April 10-11, carding a trio of 70s for a 210. Burke sank an eagle and three birdies on the day to finish in third place for his fourth career top-five finish. Penn State's Kevin Foley took home medalist honors with an eight-under 205 (69-68-68) followed by Charlotte's Corey Nagy with a 209 (74-67-68).
As a team, EMU shot a 296 in the final round to capture the Kepler Intercollegiate championship with a 54-hole total of 861 (287-288-286) at the 7,451 yard, par-71 Scarlet Course. The victory marks the first invitational title the Eagles have won since winning the 2008 Mid-American Conference Championship, March 2-4, at nearby Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio.
The Green and White's total of nine-over-par 861 (287-288-286) was the lowest 54-hole total since firing an 860 (291-283-286) for a sixth-place showing at the Boilermaker Invitational, April 19-20, 2008. Additionally, EMU's two-day, three-round mark shattered the Kepler Intercollegiate's previous three-round record of 863 set by Ohio State during the 1998 event.
Eastern was tied atop the leader board with Penn State University after the first day of play, carding a seven-over-par 575 on Saturday. The Eagles' overall score was two strokes better than the runner-up Nittany Lions in the 11-team field. Northwestern University finished in third place at 865 while the University of Oklahoma (877) and Kent State University (878) rounded out the top five.
