OLEAN, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team used a four-run seventh inning and a solid performance on the mound from sophomore left hander Collin Taylor (Cincinnati, Ohio-Lakota West) to claim a 4-1 victory over the University at Buffalo Sunday afternoon, March 28, at Fred Handler Park.
The Eagles improve to 10-14 overall and 2-1 in Mid-American Conference play with the win, while the Bulls fall to 10-10 (1-2 MAC) with the loss.
Taylor (2-2) went six and one-thirds innings to pick up the win, giving up just one run on five hits and three walks, while striking out five Bulls.
The Eagles gave Taylor all the run support he would need in the top of the seventh, as four hits, including an RBI triple by sophomore Wally Gerbus (Fairfield, Ohio-Stephen T. Baden) and an RBI double by junior Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley), helped the Eagles take a 4-1 lead, which they would not relinquish down the stretch. Leonard went 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI in the win, while Gerbus went 1-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI.
Freshman right hander Joe Battistelli (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) pitched well in relief of Taylor, as he pitched a scoreless two and two-thirds innings to preserve the series victory for the Eagles.
With the win, the Eagles have won their last six MAC regular season three-game sets. The last time the Eagles dropped two or more games in a MAC three-game series was at home versus Ohio University, April 10-12, last season. The victory also improves EMU to 7-2 all-time versus UB.
The Eagles are back in action Tuesday, March 30, when they head down the road to take on the University of Michigan Wolverines. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Ray Fisher Stadium. Last season, the Eagles and Wolverines met four times, with each squad taking two games. After taking on U-M, the Eagles head back to the friendly confines of Oestrike Stadium to host Bowling Green State University, April 2-4. Friday's game will be available via Eagle All-Access for an audio only broadcast, with Chad Bush and Dan Wyar providing the play-by-play and color commentary. Game coverage will begin at 5:50 p.m. live from Oestrike Stadium. Click here for the complete Eagle All-Access spring sports broadcast schedule.
