AVON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – A sensational performance on the mound from true freshman Steve Weber (North Royalton, Ohio-North Royalton) and an eight-run fifth inning helped the Eastern Michigan University baseball team capture an 8-0 victory over the Vikings of Cleveland State University Wednesday afternoon, March 24, at All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, Ohio.
Weber (1-0) was virtually untouchable for the Eagles in his first-career start, as he tallied a career-best 10 strikeouts in seven and two-thirds innings of shutout baseball, allowing just two hits and three walks. Weber's 10 strikeouts are the most by an EMU pitcher all season and the most since Corey Chaffins (

The Eagles put the first run on the board in the top of the fifth, as a bunt single by sophomore Wally Gerbus (Fairfield, Ohio-Stephen T. Baden) scored junior transfer Aaron Chavez (Milpitas, Calif.-Milpitas-Ohlone C.C.) to give EMU a 1-0 lead. But the Eagles were not done, as an RBI double by junior Matt Skirving (Midland, Mich.-H.H. Dow) and a two-run single by Crooks, coupled with three other EMU hits and a CSU error, helped the Eagles take a commanding 8-0 lead mid-way through the contest.
Pitching for the first time since the 2008 season was junior left hander Rob Wendzicki (Brook Park, Ohio-Midpark), who came in the game and pitched a scoreless ninth inning in relief, striking out one batter. Wendzicki missed all of 2009 because of Tommy John surgery and was sidelined for most of the summer and fall due to an off-season illness.
