FOR THE 34TH TIME: The 2009-10 season marks the 34th in Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving history. The program was started in 1976 under Head Coach Mike Cook who led the Eagles to a 5-3-1 mark in their inaugural year. EMU has had eight coaches throughout the years, with Peter Linn taking over in 2004. As women's coach, Linn has helped the Eagles to two Mid-American Conference Championships while boasting a 46-18 overall record and a 32-13 MAC mark in now his sixth season.
ABOUT THE BOBCATS: Ohio University is enjoying an impressive stretch of six straight dual meet wins which also follows a first place finish at the Akron Invite back on Dec. 6. The most impressive of the victories was against top-ranked Miami at home by a somewhat dominating, 167.5-132.5, margin. Their previous two wins over Xavier and Ball State have each come on the road, the most recent was a 156-144 victory over the Cardinals.
LAST TIME OUT: Eastern Michigan faced the difficult task of going up against top-ranked Miami Jan. 30, and the RedHawks were every bit as good as advertised, winning at home by a score of 171-129. Despite the loss, the Eagles received a good showing out of sophomore Samantha Partridge, who won three races on the afternoon in the 200- and 500-yard frees as well as the 400-yard free relay. Sarah Maraskine was also a multi-race winner, taking wins in the 100- and 200-yard back. Additionally, Briana Emig, Sarah Kowalski and Danielle Hulvey also recorded wins on the day.
EAGLES AND BOBCATS: The Eagles and Bobcats have been going at it since the inaugural 1976-77 season of women's swimming and diving at Eastern Michigan. EMU began the series with four straight wins, but Ohio has had the upper hand ever since, accumulating a 20-8 overall series mark against the Eagles. The Bobcats stopped a two-meet Eagle win streak with a convincing, 175-119, win at Jones Natatorium last season. This year the Eagles will try to slow down Ohio as both teams use this meet as a final tune-up for the 2010 MAC Championships to be held Feb. 24-27, in Oxford, Ohio.
EMU RANKED EIGHTH IN MID-MAJOR POLL: The Eagles are ranked eighth in the CSCAA Mid-Major Division I Swimming & Diving Team Poll released on Dec. 27. They follow top-ranked and Mid-American Conference foe, Miami, Boston University, Towson, Oakland, UW-Milwaukee, Florida Gulf Coast and Western Kentucky.
