» WHAT'S ON TAP:
The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team welcome the Syracuse Orange into the Chippewa Racquet Club as the squad hosts its first meet of the 2009-10 season, Friday, Feb. 5, 2010 at 1 p.m.


» SCOUTING THE ORANGE: The Orange are fresh off one of their most successful seasons in program history, having finished up with a 16-7 mark (9-2 in the Big East) in 2009.  The 'Cuse enter the match 3-0 after handing 7-0 losses to both Albany and Rutgers, and also beating St. John's 6-1. Syracuse is coached by Luke Jenson, who is 38-30 in three years as the head of the program.

» THE SERIES: The Eagles and Orange have only met one time on the court, with the Eagles taking he lone match. In the squad's only matchup, Eastern edged Syracuse,  5-4, in a 1990 decision.

» RAY RETURNS FOR A FOURTH: Head coach Ryan Ray returns for his fourth season as the women's tennis coach. In three seasons, he's led his women to an overall mark of 26-39 (11-13, MAC). His best overall finish at Eastern was his first year at the helm, 2006-07, when his team finished 12-11.

» FAMILIAR FACES: The EMU women's tennis team returns six players to a very young squad. Junior Xu Chang is the lone Eagle with more than one year of collegiate experience. Karina Ahuja, Rumbidzai Muskwe, Marcela Rivero and Miriam Westerink are all returning for their second year of action. Georgia de'Liske-Tarr, a transfer student who sat out the entire 2008-09 season but still practiced with the team, became eligible to play as of January 2010. She will also have sophomore eligibility. The two freshmen on the squad are Julia Breuss and Celine Donnet.

» FINDING TALENT ABROAD: None of the eight student-athletes on the women's tennis team were born in the United States. The ladies hail from eight different home countries. Karina Ahuja is from India. Julia Breuss hails from Austria, Xu Chang comes from China and Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr hails from the Great Down Under. Celine Donnet and Miriam Westerink are from the neighboring countries, Belgium and The Netherlands, while Rumbidzai Muskwe  is from Zimbabwe, and Marcela Rivero comes from the landlocked country of Bolivia.
