STRONG START: EMU's 14-12 record this season is the best since the 1999-2000 squad went 14-12 in its first 26 games.
CHECKING THE SERIES WITH DETROIT: The Eagles and Titans will be meeting for the 78th time in the series with Detroit holding a 59-18 advantage. The Titans have won seven consecutive games with the last EMU win an 82-80 decision, Dec. 30, 1999, in Ypsilanti. The two teams met last during the 2008-09 season with Detroit capturing a 62-47 victory in Detroit.
Head Coach Charles E. Ramsey's Eagles enter Saturday's, Feb. 20, game in Detroit with a 14-12 overall record and a 6-7 MAC mark after a 58-42 win at Toledo, Feb. 17.
Head Coach Ray McCallum's UDM team is 15-13 overall and 7-9 in Horizon League play after suffering a 70-53 setback at Wright State Wednesday, Feb. 17, in Dayton, Ohio.
ONE TELEVISION GAME LEFT: The Eagles have one televised game left on the regular-season schedule. The Thursday, March 4, home game against Central Michigan, will be televised live on FoxSports Detroit. Game time is 6:30 p.m.
BRACKET BUSTER TRIP TO DETROIT: EMU has drawn the University of Detroit for its Bracket Buster game, Feb. 20. The Eagles will travel to Detroit to meet the Titans in a 3:35 p.m. tilt. U-D holds a 59-18 advantage in the series and the Titans won a 62-47 decision in the last outing, Nov. 22, 2008. Detroit has won the last seven straight with the last EMU win an 82-80 home victory, Dec. 30, 1999. EMU is currently 14-12 overall on the season while the Eagles are 6-7 in Mid-American Conference action. U-D is 15-13 overall and 7-9 in Horizon League action.
STINGY “D”: The 42-points by Toledo in the 58-42 EMU win Wednesday, Feb. 17, marks the least amount scored by an EMU NCAA opponent since the then-Hurons held Wayne State to 42 points in a 48-42 victory at Bowen Field House, Dec. 23, 1980. The Eagles also held Toledo to just 12 first-half points in that Feb. 17 game.
ASSISTING THE OFFENSE: EMU turned in a whopping 18 team assists in the 58-42 win at Toledo, Wednesday, Feb. 17. The Eagles turned in those 18 assists on just 20 made field goals. Junior college transfer Jay Higgins (Fayetteville, N.C.-IMG Academy (Hillsborough (Fla.) C.C.) led the Eagles with seven dishes.
MAC TOURNAMENT SEEDING BATTLE HEATS UP: The battle for seeding in the upcomding FirstEnergy Mid-American Conference Men's Basketball Tournament, March 7-13, continues to heat up heading into the final two weeks of regular-season action. The top four teams in the MAC standings receive a first-round bye while the next four in the season-ending standings will host the bottom four teams. EMU currently stands in a tie for the third and four home-court games, which will be held at campus sites Sunday, March 7. The four teams receiving byes, plus the four first-round winners, will head to Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio for the quarterfinals, March 11, semifinals, March 13, and the finals, March 13.
EAGLES REMAING INTO TIE FOR THIRD IN MAC WEST DIVISION: The Eagles are currently tied for third with Western Michigan in the Mid-American Conference West Division race with a 6-7 record. Ball State is the West leader at 8-5 with Central Michigan second at 7-6. EMU and WMU are deadlocked at 6-7 with Northern Illinois 4-9 and Toledo 0-13. Akron and Kent State are tied for first in the East Division with 10-3 records while Buffalo and Miami are tied for third at 8-5, Bowling Green is fifth at 6-7 and Ohio is sixth at 5-8.
BOWDRY EARNS THIRD MAC AWARD OF THE SEASON: EMU redshirt junior forward Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) was named the Mid-American Conference men's basketball West Division Player of the Week for the week ending with Sunday's, Feb. 14th games. He also won the honor Nov. 16 and Dec. 7. He turned in two great statistics' lines for two games played last week. At Buffalo, Feb. 10, Bowdry scored 26 points with eight rebounds while playing just 24 minutes because of foul troubles in an 84-67 loss to the Bulls. He came back with 18 points and 12 rebounds in a 66-52 win over Western Michigan, Feb. 14. For the two-game stretch, Bowdry made 18-of-23 field goals (78.3 percent), 1-of-2 three-point shots (50.0 percent), 7-of-8 three throws (87.5 percent) while hauling down 20 rebounds, scoring 44 points, dishing three assists and recording two steals.
MEDLOCK, DOBBINS, BOWDRY CLIMB EMU CAREER LADDERS: The EMU trio of Carlos Medlock (Detroit, Mich.-Murray Wright), Justin Dobbins (Cleveland, Ohio-Glenville), and Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) are all making major moves up the EMU career rankings in scoring, rebounding, three-point shooting, assists and free-throw shooting. Medlock is now 11th in career scoring with 1,433 points, just the 13th player in school history to reach 1,400 points. Bowdry is 22nd at 1,170 and Dobbins is 28th withan even 1,000. Bowdry has 661 career rebounds for 10th. Dobbins is 22nd in rebounding with 504 and Medlock is 63rd at 297. Medlock is third in three-point shooting with 194 career triples, moving one spot ahead of current EMU Assistant Coach Carl Thomas (185 triples from 1987-91). Medlock is 6th in career assists at 373 and is sixth in free throws made with 411.
REACHING THE CENTURY MARK: Two EMU players have reached the century mark in career games played. Senior center Justin Dobbins (Cleveland, Ohio-Glenville) has played in 107 games, earning 91 starts for the Eagles while senior point guard Carlos Medlock (Detroit, Mich.-Murray Wright) has played in 103 career games, 102 as a starter.
