– The Eastern Michigan University softball team recently took part in a preseason community service project in which they served as volunteer instructors in a pair of clinics for softball players of Lincoln Little League in Ypsilanti Saturday, Jan. 23.

It was the second year in a row that EMU softball has participated in this event. The team volunteered for two, 1.5-hour sessions for girls 8-11 and 12-15. Junior Lauren Delapaz was one of the many Eagles to take part in the event.

“The most rewarding part is the satisfaction in helping young girls get closer to achieving their goals in the game of softball and watching them do something that we all are so passionate about,” Delapaz said. “As a young adult, it is a huge honor to be able to connect and teach the younger girls of Ypsilanti.”

Each player that makes up the 2010 Eastern Michigan softball team remembers dreaming of becoming a college softball player. Delapaz talks about how grateful she is in having the opportunity to inspire many young players like she was at a young age.

“By doing this we are able to help others who share the same passion and desire for a sport that has given us many qualities that we will use for the rest of our lives,” Delapaz said. “A lot of the girls that come to such camps and clinics aspiring to be college athletes, so being able to talk and meet with us may give them hope that one day their dreams of being a collegiate softball player may come true.”

The Eagles hosted their own series of winter skills clinics to softball players ages 8-18 this past weekend as well and will offer an all day team camp Feb. 20-21. Registration for the team camp ends Feb. 5. To register or for more information, email eoakley@emich.edu.

EMU will kick off the 2010 campaign when it heads to Fort Myers, Fla. for the Florida Gulf Coast Invitational. They take on Villanova in the season opener Feb. 26.
