EAGLES STAY HOME TO HOST UDM: The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team will be home for the second game in a row, this time hosting the University of Detroit Mercy Titans in a 2 p.m. game Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010, in the Convocation Center. The game will be part of an EMU men's-women's doubleheader with the Eagles' women's team hosting Canisius in a 4:30 p.m. tilt.
EMU is coming off a tough 58-54 home loss to Drake Wednesday, Dec. 8. The Eagles are 1-7 overall. Detroit, meanwhile, is 5-5, after a 71-69 setback Wednesday, Dec. 8, at Western Michigan.
EMU VS. DETROIT: EMU and Detroit will be meeting for the79th time and the Titans hold large 60-18 advantage in the series that began back in 1897-98 when the two teams split a pair of games that season. Detroit won last year's game, 68-66, in a BracketBuster contest, Feb. 20, 2010, at Calihan Hall in Detroit. The Eagles fought back from a 36-27 halftime deficit to make it a four-point game with 15.5 seconds left on a three-point field goal by senior point guard Carlos Medlock (Detroit, Mich.-Murray Wright).After a momentum-swinging block by freshman Jamell Harris (Euclid, Ohio-Euclid) the Eagles got the ball back, but could only manage a two-point field goal by junior college transfer forward Jay Higgins (Fayetteville, N.C.-IMG Academy-Hillsborough C.C.) at the buzzer to make the final, 68-66.
WELCOME BACK: The Eagles will be glad to see the inside of the Convocation Center after a tough five-game road swing that saw them go winless. Eastern hosted Drake Wednesday, Dec. 8, followed by a Saturday, Dec. 11, home game with the University of Detroit Mercy. Detroit is 5-5.
CLIMBING UP THE RECORD BOOK: EMU senior forward Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) enters his senior season in the top 20 in both career scoring and rebounding. After his first seven games of the 2010-11 season Bowdry has now scored 1,422 career points to rank 14th and his 794 rebounds is good for the sixth spot.
ALL-TOURNEY SELECTION: EMU senior forward Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Basketball Travelers Invitational, Dec. 3-5, 2010, in Moscow, Idaho. Bowdry scored averaged 21.7 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists in the three games. He turned in a 28-pound 12-rebound double-double in the opener against Monmouth, Dec. 3.
IN-SEASON TOURNAMENT ACTION: EMU traveled to Moscow, Idaho, Dec. 3-5, and played in the Basketball Travelers Invitational against Monmouth, North Dakota and host Idaho. The Eagles will also play in a second in-season tournament, Dec. 20-21, the Lou Henson Tournament hosted by Oakland University in Rochester, Mich. The Eagles open that tournament against Valparaiso and Oakland will play Rochester College in the other first-round game. The consolation game and championship game are set for Dec. 21.
