YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — A late second-half comeback helped the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team force overtime, but the extra five-minute session went to the University of Detroit Titans as the visitors recorded a 68-65 non-conference victory over the Eagles here Saturday afternoon, Dec. 11, 2010, in the Convocation Center.

The Eagles, now 1-8 on the year, fought back from an 11-point deficit, 41-30, with 12:19 left in regulation to tie the game at 55-55 on a three-point shot from deep on the left baseline by sophomore Derek Thompson (Detroit, Mich.-Melvindale-SEMO), with 7.3 seconds left forcing the five-minute overtime period.

Eastern would take a one-point lead twice in overtime, the second time with 2:53 left on a layup by junior forward Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) to make it 59-58.

Detroit would build its overtime advantage to five, 66-61, with 1:27 left, but once again the Eagles would surge back to cut it to three, 68-65, but a three-point shot with just one second left fell short and the Titans held on to post the three-point win.

Bowdry turned in the 28th double-double of his career with a 31-point, 19-rebound effort to lead the Eagles. Thompson added 12 points for EMU. Eastern hauled down a whopping 62 rebounds in the game while shooting just 30.7 percent, hitting 23-of-75 attempts from the field.

Detroit freshman point guard Ray McCallum, son of Titan Head Coach Ray McCallum Sr., had 31 points with eight rebounds while Donavan Foster added 12 points and LaMarcus Lowe had 10 boards. The Titans shot 34.4 percent for the game, hitting 22-of-64 shots. Detroit is now 6-5 on the season.

After taking an early 5-4 lead on two free throws by Matt Balkema (Warren, Mich.Cousino) with 16:13 left, the visitors ran off six unanswered points for a 10-5 lead after seven minutes had elapsed.

Eastern managed to fight back to take a 15-14 lead at the 8:10 mark on a 10-foot jumper by McCallum then hit a jumper followed by two free throws to make it 18-15 in favor of the Titans but Bowdry would answer with a layup to cut it to 18-17 with 6:35 on the clock.

The game stayed close the rest of the half with Detroit taking a 27-21 advantage into halftime intermission.

Offensively the first 20 minutes belonged to Bowdry for EMU, with 10 points and six rebounds, and MaCallum for U-D, with 11 points and two boards.

Both teams were cold from the field in the first half, hitting an indentical 7-of-31 shots for just 22.6 percent EMU. The Eagles won the board battle, however, 28-23.

Detroit came out of halftime with a vengeance, building its advantage to 10, 39-29, after a series of EMU offensive miscues led to easy buckets.

The Eagles would not surrender, however, slowly creeping back into the game to make it a six-point difference, 41-35, on a driving layup by Bowdry with 9:59 remaining.

Eastern would continue to chip away at the deficit, cutting it to four, 43-39, on a high-flying dunk by Will Cooper (Detroit, Mich.-Pershing-Bridgton Academy) with 7:45 left.

Detroit would manage to go back up by seven, but a pair of threes by Thompson, with the second coming with 1:29 left, would cut it to three, 54-51.

Trailing by 11, 41-30, with 12:19 left in the game the Eagles roared back to cut it to three, 54-51, with 1:29 left on a three-point field goal from the top of the circle by, his second in a row.

After a strong defensive effort on the other end, the Eagles came back on offense with making a strong inside move. The 6-foot-6 senior was fouled on the play and hit the first of two free tosses to make it 54-52. He missed the second free throw, but EMU retained possession on an out-of-bounds play but a missed three.

Eastern then fouled McCallum who would make one of two free throws for a 55-52 lead with 17.6 seconds left.

Thompson would then connect on a long triple from the left baseline to knot the game at 55 with just 3.3 seconds remaining.

The Titans had the ball inbounded in front of the EMU bench and the throw in was knocked out of bounds in front of U-D's bench, giving the visitors possession with 2.3 seconds left. A long three-pointer from right in front of the Detroit bench by Donavan Foster was just off the mark, forcing the overtime session.

Eastern will now be idle until Dec. 20-21 when it travels to Rochester, Mich. to play in the Lou Henson Tournament hosted by Oakland University. EMU will play Valparaiso in the first game, Dec. 20, and host Oakland will take on Rochester (Mich.) College.
