Women's Swimming and Diving Set To Take On Purdue

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving squad will head to Lafayette, Ind. to face off against Big Ten opponent Purdue this Friday, Nov. 12. at 6 p.m. The Green and White will be searching for their first win of the 2010-11 season, but have featured many promising performances, including that of sophomore Briana Emig who has already captured eight first place finishes in just three meets this season.
FOR THE 35TH TIME: The 2010-11 season marks the 35th in Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving history. The program was started in 1976 under Head Coach Mike Cook who led the Eagles to a 5-3-1 mark in their inaugural year. EMU has had eight coaches throughout the years, with Peter Linn taking over in the men's program in 1988. In his 22 seasons as men's head coach, Linn has guided the Eagles to 19 Mid-American Conference Championships, including eight in a row from 1988-1996. EMU finished as conference runner-up during the other three seasons of Linn's guidance. The Eagles are currently riding a 57-MAC dual meet unbeaten streak, last having dropped a MAC dual meet during the 1997-98 season. As women's coach, Linn has helped the Eagles to two Mid-American Conference Championships while boasting a 49-22 overall record and a 34-16 MAC mark in now his seventh season.
LOOKING FOR 30: The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team will be looking to win its 30th overall Mid-American Conference title this season. Not only have the Eagles won four consecutive titles, but have also captured 10 of the last 11 overall.
WE'RE GOING STREAKING: With a dual meet win against Ball State on Oct. 30, the men won their 57th consecutive MAC dual meet. The Eagles have not dropped a MAC dual meet since the 1997-98 season, when they fell to the University of Toledo, 113-130. Since that loss, the Eagles have won 11 of the past 13 MAC Championships and have been perfect in conference action.
LAST TIME OUT: The men's swimming and diving team defeated the Cardinals of Ball State in their last meet on Oct. 30. The Eagles were led by Matt Zavislak's two first place finishes after he won the 200 freestyle event in 1:44.78 and the 100 free in 47.21. Ricky Linder took home the 1,000 freestyle by posting the top time of 9:47.70. Teammate Gilles Renard followed in second place at 10:01.81. Linder later took second in the 500 freestyle behind Dylan Kab's first place efforts of 4:46.87. Mitch Kellerman won on the boards, taking first in the three meter dive for the Green and White. On the women's side, Briana Emig continued to dominate for EMU. She placed first in three events on Nov. 6 when the Eagles traveled to Oxford, Ohio to face off against MAC opponent Miami. Emig won the 1,000 free (10:17.14), 500 free (5:02.74), and 400 IM (4:35.03) for the Green and White, while teammates Sarah Maraskine, Sarah Kowalski, Paige Copeland, and Tracy Morgan secured a first place victory of their own in the 200 Free Relay (1:40.60).
SCOUTING THE BOILERMAKERS: The Purdue women's swimming and diving team will head into Friday boasting an undefeated dual meet mark for the 2010-11 season with wins over Notre Dame, Northwestern, and Miami (Ohio). Erin Mertz picked up Big Ten Diver of the Week honors (Oct. 26, 2010) after her top performace against Miami (Ohio). The men's squad sits at 3-0 in dual meets this season, as well as a first place finish at the Indiana Intercollegiates on Oct. 23. Senior diver Matt Boudia returns for Purdue after being named USA Diving's Athlete of the Year in 2009.
