YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles) -- The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team opens its longest homestand of the 2010 season Tuesday, Oct. 5, with a non-conference affair against IPFW. EMU returns to Mid-American Conference play Friday, Oct. 8, versus instate rival Western Michigan University before closing out the week Saturday, Oct. 9, against Northern Illinois University. First serve for all three matches is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Tuesday's match will be video streamed on Eagle All-Access. Veteran broadcaster Chad Bush will call the action beginning at 6:50 p.m.
OFF TO A SIZZLING START: The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team is off to a sensational start to the 2010 campaign with a 16-4 record, that includes winning 51 of its 71 sets played. EMU's 16-4 start is the program's best since the 2003 campaign when the Green and White notched a 16-4 record through its first 20 matches. The 3-1 start to Mid-American Conference play is also the squad's best since the 2005 season.
EAGLES HOST IPFW IN FINAL NON-CONFERENCE TEST: The Eagles and Mastodons are squaring off for the 12th time with Eastern Michigan holding a 6-5 advantage in the all-time series. Last year, IPFW posted a 3-0 victory at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center, Sept. 1, 2010. EMU has lost four-straight in the series, last posting a 3-2 victory, Oct. 18, 2005, in Fort Wayne, Ind.
EAGLES AND BRONCOS SET FOR FRIDAY SHOWDOWN: In-state rivals EMU and WMU are hooking up for the 70th time in the all-time series. Western Michigan holds a 50-19 edge in the series, including winning the last four meetings. The Eagles' last victory over the Broncos was a 3-1 decision in the quarterfinals of the 2007 MAC Tournament at the SeaGate Centre in Toledo, Ohio, Nov. 16.
EMU AND NIU HOOK UP FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 2010: Northern Illinois holds a slim 22-18 lead in the all-time series that dates back to the 1981 season. NIU swept the 2009 season series, winning a 3-2 marathon match in DeKalb, Ill., Oct. 10, before posting a 3-0 sweep in the finale in Ypsilanti, Nov. 13.
SECOND-LARGEST TURNAROUND IN SCHOOL HISTORY: The 11-game improvement from five wins in 2009 to the 16 victories this season is the second biggest in school history. The current standard of a 12-game turnaround came during the 1990 campaign, when the Eagles went from 18 victories to 30 wins, and again in 2001, when EMU went from seven wins to 19. The 1993 team posted a 10-game improvement and the 1999 squad finished with a nine-game improvement.
YOUTH MOVEMENT: Head Coach Kim Berrington has relied heavily on underclassmen with freshmen and sophomores accounting for 74.9 percent of the squad's kills, 72.5 percent of its blocks and 70.5 percent of its points.
KEEP 'EM DOWN: Just 13 teams have hit better than .100 against the Eagles this season and only five teams have hit better than .200. Eastern Michigan ranks third in the Mid-American Conference with an opponent hitting percentage of .155.
HOME SWEET HOME: The Green and White have enjoyed the friendly confines of the EMU Convocation Center over the past 10 seasons, posting a 67-34 mark in the “Nest,” including three home victories this season.
IAQUANIELLO NETS HER SECOND MAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONOR: For the second time in four weeks, outside hitter Rachel Iaquaniello was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday, Oct. 4. Iaquaniello shared the weekly accolade with Northern Illinois University's Lauren Wicinski. Iaquaniello helped power the Eagles to a 2-1 week, averaging 5.00 kills, 2.50 digs and 5.25 points per set, while hitting .277 (50-14-130).
IAQUANIELLO BLASTS OFF AGAINST TOLEDO: In a four-set victory over Toledo, Oct. 1, Sophomore Rachel Iaquaniello recorded 27 kills versus the Rockets at Savage Arena. Iaquaniello's 27 kills are the fourth-best total among MAC players this season and the most kills recorded in a four-set match by any player in the conference since 2006. Her total is, however, the second-highest number of kills recorded in a MAC match this season. Besides being a career-best, Iaquaniello's 27 markers are also the most by an EMU student-athlete since Lindsay Piccolini notched 28 against Western Michigan, Sept. 23, 2006.
IT'S A LONG ROAD: Eastern Michigan started off the 2010 season playing its first 14 matches on the road. The Eagles traveled over 4,846 miles round-trip in its first four weekends. Eastern opened the season at the 35th Annual Comfort Suites/SHSU Invitational, Sept. 27-28, and then travel to Lewisburg, Pa., Sept. 3-4, for the Bucknell Tournament. From there, Eastern played at Oakland University, Sept. 7, before heading north to the Michigan State Tournament, Sept. 10-11. The Green and White jetted south to the Davidson Invitational in Davidson, N.C., Sept. 17-18, before returning to the Convocation Center to tip off the home season, Sept. 21, versus Youngstown State.
