Xu Chang advances after a bye, win
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team got underway at the ITA Midwest Regional in Ann Arbor, Mich., today, Oct. 21, as the singles qualifying matches got underway.
Xu Chang was the Eagles' standout competitor on the day as the senior, who opened with first round bye, advanced to the final round of qualifying with a second round, three-set win over IPFW's Racquel Vescovi (6-3, 5-7, 6-1).
Mariya Toncheva and Marcela Rivera were also able to pick up wins in the consolation round after each dropped their first round qualifying match.
"I wasn't happy with the way we competed in the first round today,” said EMU Head Coach Ryan Ray. “We didn't bring the right energy to the court and that makes a huge difference. We'll strive for a better effort tomorrow.”
Chang will compete in the final round of qualifying at 9 a.m., Friday, Oct. 22. Doubles Main Draw action begins later Friday at 2 p.m.
