Tennis to kick off day two of invite, Saturday

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (EMUEagles.com) – Four Eagles advanced in singles play to Day Two Semifinal matches at the United States Air Force Academy Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Friday, Oct. 1.

Xu Chang, Mariya Toncheva, Marcela Rivero and Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr all advanced to the semifinals after winning in singles play. Chang, after having a first round bye, was able to knock an Oregon opponent out with a 6-2, 6-1 win. Rivero won by the same margin of victory in her opening match, and was able to battle to a 6-3, 4-6, 10-5 win in her second match.

Freshman Toncheva strung together consecutive victories to advance, including a three-set, come-from-behind win over UNC Greensboro's Annette Rios, 3-6, 6-4, 10-8. de'Lisle-Tarr was also tested in her win.

In doubles, Rivero was teamed up with UNC-Greensboro's Molly Sutherland as the pair defeated a N. Colorado duo, 8-2.

“We did not start the day well in doubles,” said EMU Head Coach Ryan Ray. “We dug ourselves a hole in the matches which makes it difficult to come back in just an eight game pro set. Our intensity still needs improvement in doubles. However, I thought we competed fairly well in singles to have four singles semifinalists tomorrow. We'll battle again tomorrow.”

The Eagles will resume play Saturday, Oct. 2.
