Complete Release (.pdf)
BUSY DAYS AHEAD: The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team will begin its trek through the 2010 portion of its schedule Friday, Jan. 8, with a 6 p.m. bout against Seton Hill University in Greensburg, Pa. The Eagles will then head to Pittsburgh, Pa. for the Pitt Quad Saturday, Jan. 9, where they will take on Columbia University, No. 25 ranked University of Pittsburgh and Waynesburg University.
TIME TO SHINE: With four matches on the slate for the Eagles this weekend, 19 EMU wrestlers will have a chance to see action in the first dual matches of the new year. For senior Cody Hier and sophomore Wes Schroeder, a place in the starting lineup would mark the first dual competition of the season for both grapplers.
“We are traveling with a lot of our guys this weekend because have four matches in two days,” said Head Coach Derek DelPorto. “We will be smart about the line-ups we present at the matches.”
LAST TIME OUT AT PITT: EMU last paid a visit to the Steel City Feb. 10, 2007, when it recorded a pair of dominating performances against Wagner College (52-0) and Duquesne University (30-12). The Eagles posted five pins and a trio of technical falls in those two matches.
WHAT ARE THE ODDS?: Saturday's tussle with No. 25 Pittsburgh will mark the second time this season that EMU will face a nationally ranked opponent. The Eagles dropped a 29-6 decision earlier this season to Indiana University, Dec. 12, who ranked No. 13 nationally at that time. Additionally, the Eagles are 0-5 against top 25 teams dating back to the 2008-09 campaign.
BREAK'S OVER: The Green and White return to the mat following a more than two week break. However, EMU wrestlers have been using the time to prepare for tough battles both this weekend and through the 2010 schedule.
“We trained hard and smart through the holiday break with a combination of wrestling and rest to ensure our health going into the 2010 portion of the season,” said Head Coach Derek DelPorto. We have back-to-back weigh-in on Friday and Saturday which may be a bit challenging for some of our guys, but great preparation for the MAC Tournament. Essentially, that is what we are training for.”
SIX HOME DATES IN 2010: Five of the Eagles' 10 scheduled events in 2010 will take place in Ypsilanti. On Jan. 15, EMU hosts Clarion University. The Eagles then kick-off Mid-American Conference bouts when Central Michigan University invades, Jan. 21. On Jan. 23, the Eagles take on the University of Indianapolis, Olivet College and Thiel University at the Eastern Duals.
The Eagles finish up their home schedule with three MAC teams: the University at Buffalo, Feb. 3, Northern Illinois University, Feb. 5, and Ohio University, Feb. 21. Don't miss out on all the action as the Eagles go for their first MAC Championship in 13 years!
