EMU unsuccessful against the Big 10 in two weekend matches
IOWA CITY, Iowa (EMUEagles.com) - Eastern Michigan University sophomore Miriam Westerink (Rheden, The Netherlands-Thomas a Kempis) was the lone bright spot for the women's tennis team Sunday, Jan. 24, as the team was downed 6-1 by the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa.
Following a tough loss to Purdue Friday, the Eagles saddled up for Big 10 Conference competition for the second time in three days. Westerink was impressive in EMU's lone win against the Hawkeyes. She defeated Zuzi Chmelanova in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
Newcomer Julia Breuss (Dornbirn, Austria-Sportgymnasium) had perhaps the most difficult assignment of the day as she took on Sonja Molnar, ranked No. 65 in the nation in singles. After an unsuccessful first set, losing 6-2, Breuss was unable to rally for an upset as she fell 6-1 in set two.
"We had some decent singles performances today at certain spots," said EMU Head Coach Ryan Ray. "In doubles we made alot of early errors in the points, which made life easy for Iowa. We need to work to get healthier in certain positions, and also get more balance of performance throughout the lineup as we move forward."
The Eagles resume competition Saturday, Jan. 30, as the team heads to Huntington, WV to take on the Thundering Herd of Marshall University.
