Eastern feeling the rigors of the road after third straight loss
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (EMUEagles.com) — The nation's 68th-ranked Marshall University proved too much for the Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team, Saturday, Jan. 30, as the Eagles fell 6-1 on the road in Huntington, W. Va. against the Thundering Herd.
Eastern was unable to win a singles match, but did take two of the three doubles competition matches versus the national powerhouse. Miriam Westerink (Rheden, The Netherlands-Thomas a Kempis) and Julia Breuss (Dornbirn, Austria-Sportgymnasium) downed Michaela Kissell and Dominika Zaprazna, the No. 14 ranked doubles pair in the nation, to give the Eagles their first win of the day. Also, Xu Chang (Beijing, China) and Celine Donnet (Hemiksem, Belgium-Institut Deschamps) turned in the other doubles win for the Green and White.
"We introduced a lot of new doubles strategies this week," said EMU Head Coach Ryan Ray. "It was great to see the ladies use those with comfort, and to be effective in doing so. Julia and Miriam picked up a great win against the 14th-ranked team in the nation."
In singles matches, Donnet put up the toughest fight as she was able to force extra points in the second set of a 6-2, 7-6 defeat.
"We are lacking that full competitive balance in our lineup," Ray added. "We will need to find this to be successful."
The Eagles will be back in action Friday, Feb. 5, as it hosts its first home meet at the Chippewa Club against the Syracuse Orange. The match will begin at 1 p.m.
