Eagles Take One at Spartan Duals

Sean Clair has career day with trio of victories
EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team suffered a first round setback to Rutgers University, 30-9, rebouned with a 21-14 victory over the University of Findlay, and fell in the final match, 26-15, to Stanford University Saturday, Jan. 16, at the Spartan Duals. Senior Sean Clair (Turtlecreek, Pa.-Plum) was the top EMU performer at the event, winning all three of his matches including a pin of No. 17 ranked Bill Ashnault of Rutgers.
With a 1-2 record at the event, the Eagles move to 7-7-1 on the season.
The opening round against Rutgers saw the Eagles take an early 6-3 lead thanks to a pin from Clair over Ashnault at 133 lbs. Clair needed just 3:56 to complete EMU's biggest individual upset of the season. However, EMU was not able to keep momentum on its side as the Scarlet Knights exploded for five consecutive victories to take a commanding 24-6 lead.
“True” freshman Phillip Joseph (Lapeer, Mich.-Lapeer East) ended the Eagles' losing skid at 184 lbs. with a 7-5 decision over Cullen Isenberg. Rutgers claimed the final two bouts to win the dual, 30-9.
Senior Chris Jenkins (Tecumseh, Mich.-Tecumseh) and Clair began the middle match against Findlay with a pin and decision at 125 lbs. and 133 lbs., respectively, to give EMU a 9-0 lead. Findlay claimed the following two matches via technical fall and decision to pull within one, 9-8.
EMU responded by winning four of the remaining six matches to dispose of Findlay, 21-14. Freshmen Aaron Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio-Holy Name) (157 lbs.), Alex Ortman (Temperance, Mich.-Bedford) (165 lbs.), Joseph (184 lbs.), and junior David Wade (Beavercreek, Ohio-Beavercreek) (heavyweight) each recorded decisions in their respective matches as the Eagles evened their record at 1-1.
In the final dual against Stanford, Clair won his third match of the day with a hard-fought 1-0 shutout over Justin Paulson. Down 10-3, the Eagles pulled to within one point after senior David Pienaar (Trafford, Pa.-Greensburg Catholic Central) (149 lbs.) and Sulzer picked-up decisions in their matches.
Stanford then turned the tables with four consecutive victores to enter the final bout ahead 26-9. Wade was awarded a win in the heavyweight match due to forfeit which made the final score 26-15 for Stanford.
The Eagles will be back in action Thursday, Jan. 21, when they host Central Michigan University at Bowen Field House beginning at 7 p.m. The match will be the first of four home Mid-American Conference tilts for EMU this season.
