YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—
The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team dropped its first of five duals against Mid-American Conference opponents with a 34-3 setback against No. 7 ranked Central Michigan University Thursday evening, Jan. 21, at Bowen Field House. The Eagles were defeated in the opening five matches and recorded just one individual victory in the loss.

The Eagles (7-8-1; 0-1 MAC) have now dropped 19 consecutive duals to the Chippewas (10-2; 1-0 MAC) and have lost three consecutive home bouts.

A last minute lineup change by EMU Head Coach Derek DelPorto gave “true” freshman Greg Egbert (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Ypsilanti) the call at 125 lbs. against No. 10 Matt Steintrager. Steintrager jumped out to a 10-1 lead after one period with a pair of takedowns and six consecutive near-fall tallies. The senior maintained complete control until the 46 second mark of the second frame, when he pinned Egbert to give CMU a 6-0 lead.

Senior Sean Clair (Turtlecreek, Pa.-Plum) then took to the mat to face No. 9 Scotti Sentes at 133 lbs. Clair surrendered a takedown in the first period, but opened the middle frame with an escape to cut his deficit to 2-1. In the waning moments of the second period, Sentes pulled ahead, 4-1, with another takedown.

Clair was unable to make any noise in the third period, as Sentes added an escape and 2:29 of riding time to claim a 6-1 win. The victory put the Chippewas ahead, 9-0.

At 141 lbs., senior Chris Jenkins (Tecumseh, Mich.-Tecumseh) went up against Conor Beebe. Jenkins fell behind, 4-0, midway through the match following a takedown and reversal by Beebe. An escape and takedown by Jenkins would prove no help, as Beebe tacked-on five additional points for CMU's third straight victory, 9-3.

Trailing 12-0 overall, senior David Pienaar (Trafford, Pa.-Greensburg Catholic Central) tried to infuse some life into the EMU squad at 149 lbs. against Justin McDermitt. In a back-and-forth first two minutes, Pienaar took a 2-0 lead with an early takedown. After escaping to begin the second period, McDermitt took the lead, 4-2, with a takedown and a penalty point for stalling.

McDermitt wasted no time adding to his lead in the final period, as he took advantage of a Pienaar miscue for a takedown. Pienaar could not recover from the deficit, as CMU rolled to its fourth win, 6-4, to take a 15-0 lead.

Freshman Aaron Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio-Holy Name) got off to a 2-1 lead at 157 lbs. with a first period takedown of Donnie Corby. Corby recorded an escape and then went ahead, 4-2, with an escape in the final seconds of the middle frame. An early third period escape from Sulzer pulled him to within one, but Corby controlled much of the final minute to keep his opponent at bay for a 4-3 win.

The Chippewas were on a five-match winning streak with an 18-0 lead halfway through the dual.

Coach DelPorto sent freshman Alex Ortman (Temperance, Mich.-Bedford) to the mat at 165 lbs. to face Eric Cubberly. After two periods, Ortman held a 4-2 advantage thanks to a pair of takedowns. In the final frame, Ortman surrendered a late escape but allowed Cubberly to come no closer. Ortman won the match, 4-3, and put the Eagles on the board, 18-3.

With a win under their belts, the Green and White featured junior Nick Hendrick (Columbiaville, Mich.-Powers Catholic) at 174 lbs. against No. 19 Tyler Grayson. A close first period was erased in the second, as Grayson turned a 2-1 advantage into an 8-1 score after six near-fall points. Grayson made it no easier on Hendrick in the third period as he added nine points to claim a 17-2 technical fall for a 23-3 Chippewas advantage.

At 184 lbs. “true” freshman Phillip Joseph (Lapeer, Mich.-Lapeer East) took an early 3-2 lead over No. 9 Ben Bennett with an escape and takedown. However, Bennett tallied 16 unanswered points plus riding time through the remainder of the match for CMU's second consecutive technical fall, 18-3. With two matches remaining, CMU was ahead, 28-3.

Eric Simaz and senior Josh Lewis (West Liberty, Ohio-Salem) then battled at 197 lbs., where Simaz had a 4-1 advantage after five minutes of play. Simaz added an escape and one point for riding time in the third period for a 6-1 win to make the score 31-3 in favor of the visitors.

Sophomore Wes Schroeder (Manitou Beach, Mich.-Addison) and No. 3 Jarod Trice capped off the evening with the heavyweight bout, where both grapplers fought to a scoreless tie after one period. Trice got on the board in the second period with an escape to take a 1-0 edge into the final two minutes.

Schroeder pulled even with an escape of his own to begin the third period. With overtime looming, Trice managed an escape with five seconds remaining to slip away with a 3-1 win. The match concluded with CMU on top, 34-3.

The Eagles will be back in action Saturday, Jan. 23, when they host the University of Indianapolis, Olivet College and Thiel College at the Eastern Duals. The event kicks-off at 1 p.m. at Bowen Field House.
