Volleyball Swept by Army in Finale of Army Invitational

Black Knights dominate in the 3-0 decision

WEST POINT, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team wrapped up play Saturday, Aug. 29, at the Army Invitational hosted by the United States Military Academy. The Eagles dropped a 3-0 (24-26, 14-25, 16-25) decision to the host Black Knights at Gillis Field House.
Freshman Rachel Iaquaniello continued her red-hot start to the 2009 campaign, leading the way with nine kills and nine digs on the day. No other EMU student-athlete was able to notch more than three kills, as freshman Kristen Baker and sophomore Cassie Sowers each finished with three put-a ways apiece. Sophomore Ashley Mason turned in 20 set assists to go along with a team-best 11 digs.
Army was buoyed by Ariana Mankus with nine kills to go along with Francine Vasquez's eight kills.
For the match, the Black Knights recorded a hitting percentage of .237 (39-16-97) while the Eagles struggled mighty with a mark of -.011 (23-24-94). Army also notched seven total blocks to just four for EMU.
Eastern Michigan's seven-match road trip continues Tuesday, Sept. 1, with a swing through Fort Wayne, Ind. for a non-conference affair versus the Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW). First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center. EMU leads the all-time series versus the Mastodons, 6-4, however IPFW has won the last three meetings dating back to the 2006 season.
