Volleyball Falls at IPFW, 3-0

Freshman Rachel Iaquaniello once again paced the Eagles with 10 kills

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (23-25, 15-25, 10-25) non-conference decision to IPFW Tuesday evening, Sept. 1, here at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center. Freshman Rachel Iaquaniello paced the attack with her second double-double of the campaign with 10 kills and 10 digs on the night.

With the loss the Eagles drop to 0-4 on the young season while the Mastodons improve to 3-2 on the year.

Behind Iaquaniello, junior Jennifer Swartz finished with seven kills and three block assists and sophomore Jill Bates had four put-a-ways and two-block assists.

Rebekah Roehm led IPFW with nine kills, five digs and three block assist, while Mayara Schlindwein had eight kills and six digs.

For the match, the Mastodons hit .299 (34-8-87) to just .067 (31-24-104) for the Green and White.

The opening frame was a see-saw affair with the Mastodons able to jump out to a 10-8 advantage via three consecutive off the hand of Schlindwein. The run would continue as the IPFW lead grew to four, 21-17, forcing head coach Kim Berrington to burn a timeout. The Eagles would respond to pull within a point, 24-23, but a kill from Jen Krumwiede ended the set and gave the Mastodons the early 1-0 edge.

In the second set., IPFW rolled off six of the first seven points to take a commanding lead. EMU was never able to recover as the homestanding 'Dons captured the 25-15 victory. IPFW hit a solid .250 (9-2-28) during the stanza compared to .086 (10-7-35) for Eastern Michigan.

IPFW again jumped out to a big lead in the finale,15-5, en route to pulling away for the three-set sweep.

The Eagles look to pick up their first victory Friday afternoon, Sept. 4, versus the University of Miami (Fla.) in the opener of the Northern Colorado Classic in Greeley, Colo. First serve is set for 4:30 p.m. MST. Eastern will then square off versus the host Bears of the University of Northern Colorado Saturday, Sept. 5, at noon followed by a 4:30 p.m. contest versus North Dakota State University.
