TULSA, Okla. (EMUEagles.com) — A pair of former Eastern Michigan University men's golfers took to the links against some of the best amateurs in the world at the 109th U.S. Amateur Championship. Christopher Ross and Graham Hill traveled to Oklahoma this week, Aug. 24-30, for the event at Southern Hills Country Club.
Ross qualified for match play with a seven-over 147 (75-72), while Hill missed cut with an 11-over 151 (77-74). Ross earned the 49th seed, and was paired against No. 16 Corey Nagy in the round of 64. Ross was able to pull the first round upset, posting a 5&4 victory to advance to play No. 17 Travis Woolf, who opened with a 4&3 decision over No. 48 Brady Johnson.
Ross defeated Woolf, winning 2&1 in the second round. Ross, down one heading to the 13th hole, birdied two of the next three to go up two and then matched Woolf shot-for-shot to close it out.
However, Ross' luck ran out in the round of 16, as No. 33 Charlie Holland recorded a 2&1 victory to advance into the Elite Eight. Holland, who attends the University of Texas, was coming off an upset of top-seeded Tim Jackson, 1-up, in Thursday's early match.
Ross played his sectional qualifying match at Prestwick Village Golf Club, July 27, and finished with a 135.
Begun in 1895, the U.S. Amateur is the oldest of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
