EMU Student-Athletes Turn In Another Award Winning Season

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — It was another record-setting season in both athletics and academics for Eastern Michigan University student-athletes in 2008-09.
In 2008-09, EMU student-athletes won a pair of Mid-American Conference titles last season in men's cross country and swimming, while finishing as the runner-up in men's golf, men's indoor track, men's outdoor track, women's golf and women's soccer en route to a second place finish in the Reese Trophy standings.
For their efforts, 54 EMU student-athletes earned All-MAC honors (27 - first team, 26 - second team, 1 - honorable mention) in 2008-09. Additionally, the conference office awarded acknowledged EMU student-athletes on 48 different occasions for Player of the Week accolades in 19 of EMU's 21 sports.
Furthermore, 36 student-athletes were singled out for Academic All-MAC honors with 13 more earning honorable mention accolades. Also, a total of 12 EMU standouts were selected for the prestigious weekly MAC Scholar-Athlete Award, which is given to just one male and one female student-athlete from nominees of all 12 league schools.
In the classroom, swimmer Don Ellison (King City, Ont.-King City Secondary) collected ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American second team honors while volleyball's Jill Wolosiansky (Uniontown, Ohio-Green), baseball's Kyle Rhoad (Fostoria, Ohio-Elmwood) and track's Oliver Walther (Erfurt, Germany-Pierre-de-Coubertin Gymnasium) picked up third team accolades. In total, six EMU student-athletes earned ESPN/CoSIDA Academic All-District honors to go along with men's basketball standouts Wendale Farrow (Sacramento, Calif.-Mira Loma-American River J.C.), Zane Gay (Olivet, Mich.-Olivet) and Tyler Jones (Belleville, Mich.-Belleville) taking home honors court recognition from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) for academic excellence for the 2008-09 season. Senior Josh Karanja (Ottawa, Canada-Nepean) earned All-American honors in men's track and field for the Eagles as well.
On the women's side, golfers Darby Peters (Lake Orion, Mich.-Lake Orion), Lina Pasquali (Kendallville, Ind.-East Noble), Marjorie Thuot (Joliette, Quebec-Therese-Martin) and Stephany Fleet (Dewitt, Mich.-Dewitt) were selected to the National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar teams. The women's rowing program had seven rowers named scholar-athletes by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA). Heather Anderson (St. Catharines, Ontario-Holy Cross Secondary), Kate Dirks (St. Catharines, Ontario-Eden), Kristen Dunkin (Tipp City, Ohio-Tippecanoe), Anamarie Esteva (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Gabriel Richard), Noel McAuliffe (Goodrich, Mich.-Goodrich), Janelle Mitchell (Chicago, Ill.-Morgan Park) and Beth Logsdon (Port Clinton, Ohio-Port Clinton) all earned the prestigious honor.
