Junior outfielder sweeps MAC weekly awards

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Junior outfielder Jenny Scherer (Stow, Ohio-Stow-Munroe) was selected the Mid-American Conference Scholar Athlete of the Week after hitting five home runs and helping the Eagles to a 5-1 mark during last week's action. For her efforts, she was also tabbed as the MAC West Division softball Player of the Week.

For Scherer, it marks the first time in her career that she earned the scholar athlete award. Scherer, an accounting major with a 3.60 GPA, helped the Eagles to a 5-1 record this past week, including a 3-1 MAC mark. The junior outfielder hit .450 (9-for-20) with five home runs and 10 RBI during the six-game stretch. The five home runs pushed her season total to 14, establishing a new single season mark for EMU softball.

In addition, she scored nine runs, hit two doubles, stole a base and was intentionally walked to keep the Eagles in contention for a MAC Tournament berth until the final game of the season. In the second contest against Detroit, she hit two home runs to help the Eagles to a 12-2 win. Her home run in the sixth inning against Bowling Green helped the Eagles rally from 7-1 down to an eventual 8-7 win.

The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
