YPSILANTI
, Mich.Redshirt freshman Wally Gerbus (Fairfield, Ohio-Stephen T. Baden) belted two home runs Thursday night, May 14, at Oestrike Stadium, to lead the Eastern Michigan University baseball team to a 7-6 win over Central Michigan University in a Mid-American Conference West Division tilt.

The Eagles improve to 22-32 (12-13 MAC) with the win, while CMU drops to 26-27 (11-14 MAC) with the loss.

Gerbus finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and five RBI in the win. It marks Gerbus' second-career multi-homer game, his first being his four home run performance at Bowling Green State University, April 8.

Redshirt sophomore pitcher Corey Chaffins (New London, Ohio-New London) picked up the win for the Eagles, putting him at 5-3 on the mound this season. Chaffins went six innings, giving up six runs on 11 hits, striking out five Chips in the victory.

CMU jumped out to an early lead in top of the first, scoring four runs, including a solo homer by Nate Theunissen, to take a 4-0 lead.

The Eagles got one of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning, as a lead-off solo blast by senior Kyle Rhoad (Fostoria, Ohio-Elmwood) made it a 4-1 game.

Gerbus made it a 4-4 game in the bottom of the second, as his three-run bomb over the right field wall plated senior Aaron Powell (Clarkston, Mich.-Clarkston) and junior Aaron Crooks (Toledo, Ohio-Ottawa Hills) to even things up.

Sophomore Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley) gave EMU the lead in the bottom of the third, as his RBI single up the middle plated sophomore Matt Skirving (Midland, Mich.-H.H. Dow) to put the Eagles ahead, 5-4. The Eagles tacked on two more in the inning to make it a 7-4 game.

The Chippewas made it a one run game in the top of the sixth, as an RBI single by Robbie Harman and an RBI groundout by Scott Phillion made it a 7-6 game.

But a solid relief effort down the stretch by seniors Bobby Henderson (Milford, Mich.-Detroit Catholic Central) and Kevin Wammes (Fremont, Ohio-St. Joseph) helped the Eagles take game one and help their chances of qualifying for the MAC Tournament. Wammes picked up the save for EMU, his third of the season.

The Eagles and Chips are back in action tomorrow at 3:05 p.m. at Oestrike Stadium. Freshman pitcher Jordan Glover (Toronto, Ontario-Ontario Schools) will get the nod for the Eagles, while lefty Steve Teno will start for CMU.
