YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team put on an impressive show at the plate Wednesday afternoon, April 22, as the Eagles pounded out 13 hits en route tova 16-5 victory over the Vikings of Cleveland State University in a non-conference match-up at Oestrike Stadium.
EMU improves to 12-27 with the victory, while CSU drops to 12-21 with the loss.
Junior Andrew Marshall (Mason, Mich.-Mason) had a solid day at the dish for the Eagles, going 2-for-5 with two home runs, two runs scored and four RBI in the victory. Sophomore Matt Skirving (Midland, Mich.-H.H. Dow) went 1-for-4 with one run and four RBI in the win.
Junior Jim Gulliver (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) and redshirt freshman Wally Gerbus (Fairfield, Ohio-Stephen T. Baden) each belted homers in the victory, as Gulliver went 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Gerbus went 2-for-5 with one RBI.
Freshman hurler Kendall Lewis (Huntsville, Ohio-Indian Lake) pitched well for the Eagles, going seven innings, giving up one run on six hits and striking out four Vikings to earn the win, his second of the season.
After tallying two runs in the first, the Eagles put up three more in the second, as a two-run homer by Gerbus and a CSU error made it a 5-0 game.
Gulliver made it a 6-0 game in the bottom of the fourth, as his RBI single up the middle plated freshman Brent Ohrman (Adrian, Mich.-Adrian) to extend EMU's lead. Ohrman went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and three runs scored in the win.
Marshall helped extend EMU's lead in the bottom of the fifth, as his three-run homer and solo homer in the same inning paved the way for a commanding 15-0 lead.
The Eagles are back in action Friday, April 24, when they begin a three-game Mid-American Conference set with the Huskies of Northern Illinois University. Game one is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. at Oestrike Stadium, while games two and three are slated for 3:05 p.m. and 1:05 p.m., respectively.
