BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – A five-run fifth inning and a solid performance on the mound from freshman Jordan Glover (Toronto, Ontario-Ontario Schools) helped the Eastern Michigan University baseball team spoil Indiana University's home opener Wednesday afternoon, March 4, as the Eagles registered a 10-6 victory over the Hoosiers at Sembower Field.
The victory puts EMU at 3-6 this season, while IU drops to 3-4 with the loss.
Glover picked up his first collegiate victory in the win, yielding three runs (one earned) on seven hits over six innings, while Joey O'Gara took the loss for the Hoosiers.
Junior Jim Gulliver (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) tallied his fifth multi-hit game of the season in the victory, going 2-for-2 at the plate with three runs and one RBI, while walking three times.
After having is 13-game hit-streak snapped last weekend, sophomore Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley) had a solid day at the plate, going 1-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Despite having his hit-streak snapped against Georgia State University, Feb. 27, Leonard has still managed to reach base safely in EMU's last 15 games dating back to last season.
The Eagles were able to cash in one run on no hits in the top of the first, as a pair of walks to Gulliver and senior Kyle Rhoad (Fostoria, Ohio-Elmwood) forced IU starter Kyle Leinendecker out of the game early. After Leonard reached on a fielder's choice to send Gulliver to third, Andrew Marshall (Mason, Mich.-Mason) grounded out to plate EMU's first run and give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage. But the Hoosiers capitalized on an EMU error in the bottom half of the inning, scoring a pair of runs to take a 2-1 advantage. Marshall went 1-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and one run in the victory.
After junior Aaron Crooks (Toledo, Ohio-Ottawa Hills) reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning and advanced to third, Gulliver belted a single to right field in the top of the second to score Crooks and make it a 2-2 game.
After the Hoosiers tallied a run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-2 lead, back-to-back RBI singles by Leonard and Marshall gave EMU a 4-3 lead and forced IU reliever Joey O'Gara out of the game. The Eagles tacked on three more in the top of the fifth to go up, 7-3.
The Eagles all but sealed the victory in the top of the eighth, as singles by Aaron Powell (Clarkston, Mich.-Clarkston) and Aaron Crooks, and an intentional walk to Leonard, led to three runs, giving EMU a commanding 10-3 lead. Relief efforts from freshman Kendall Lewis (Huntsville, Ohio-Indian Lake), sophomore Tim Combs (Dayton, Ohio-Wayne) and senior Kevin Wammes (Fremont, Ohio-St. Joseph) in the final three innings helped the Eagles leave Bloomington with the win.
The victory marks just the second win all-time against the Hoosiers, as IU holds a 3-2 all-time record against EMU.
The Eagles head to Ruston, La. this weekend for their first ever meeting with the Bulldogs of Louisiana Tech, March 6-8. Game one of the series is scheduled for Friday, March 6, at 6 p.m.
