Gymnastics Takes Fifth at MAC Championship

MUNCIE, Ind. – In its final competition of the season, the Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team finished in fifth place at the 2009 Mid-American Conference Gymnastics Championship at Worthen Arena Saturday afternoon, March 21, as the Eagles tallied a team score of 191.675 to tie with Ball State University.

The Golden Flashes of Kent State University took home the title with a score of 194.500, followed by Central Michigan University (194.375), Northern Illinois University (192.700), Bowling Green State University (192.425), EMU and BSU (191.675) and Western Michigan University (190.075).

Like she's done all season, junior gymnast Erin Grigg (North Bay, Ontario-Widdifield) carded the high mark of the afternoon for the Eagles, as her 9.800 on the vault helped EMU to a 48.600 team score on the beam. Grigg also tallied a 9.600 on the floor, but managed just an 8.800 on the balance beam. In the final rotation, Grigg notched a 9.700 on the bars to help EMU to a 47.975 score in its final event of the competition.

Senior Monica Lucas (Winston-Salem, N.C.-Reynolds) carded an impressive mark on the vault, as her 9.750 also helped the Eagles to a solid team score on the vault.

Freshman Stacie Wood (Brantford, Ontario-Brantford Collegiate Institute) had EMU's highest mark in the floor exercise, as her 9.775 helped the Eagles finish with a team score of 48.250 on the floor.

Senior Maureen Moss (Gurnee, Ill.-Warren Township) came into the MAC Championships as the team's top performer on the balance beam, and her 9.675 in the second rotation was a team-high and helped the Eagles to a 46.850 on the beam.
