Scherer, just a junior, entered 2009 with 22 career home runs, needing three to break Lauren Clark's mark of 24. The junior outfielder homered against Albany (Feb. 20), Maine (Feb. 26) and against Stony Brook (March 1) to put her atop the all-time list.
The Eagles struck quickly against the Sea Wolves, scoring two runs in the first frame off Scherer's two-run blast to left field. EMU put another three markers on the board in the second to go up 5-0, with McKenna Russ (North Canton, Ohio-Hoover) knocking in two runs with a single up the middle.
After allowing SBU a run in the fourth, the Green and White tacked on one more run in the fifth off a Stacie Skodinski (South Bend, Ind.-Washington) sacrifice fly to center. The Eagles held the 6-1 advantage the rest of the contest to record the win.
Junior Michelle Hletko (Wesmont, Ill.-Westmont) pitched 5.1 innings in the circle, notching a career-best five strikeouts to pick up the victory. Jaclyn Caro (Chino, Calif.-St. Lucy's Priory) picked up her second save of the season, pitching 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
The Eagles are now off for two weeks before heading to Louisville, Ky., March 13-15, to participate in the Courtyard by Marriott Cardinal Tournament. EMU will take on the host Cardinals, March 13 at 4 p.m.
