YPSILANTI, Mich.- The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball fell short to a visiting Ohio University Bobcats team, dropping a 52-41 contest, Wednesday, Feb. 4, at the Convocation Center. The Eagles got within a point in the second half but could get no closer.
YPSILANTI, Mich.- The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball fell short to a visiting Ohio University Bobcats team, dropping a 52-41 contest, Wednesday, Feb. 4, at the Convocation Center. The Eagles got within a point in the second half but could get no closer.
With the loss, the Eagles fall to 4-16 (0-8 MAC) on the year while Ohio improves to 8-12 (4-4 MAC). EMU shot 26 percent (14-for-54) in the contest, including just 19 percent (3-for-16) from beyond the arc. Ohio hit for a 40 percent (20-for-50) clip with a 23.5 percent (4-for-17) showing from three-point land. EMU out-rebounded the Bobcats by one, 39-38, while both teams racked up 21 turnovers.
Freshman Paige Redditt (Belton, Mo.-Belton) was the only Eagle in double-figures, leading the way with 10 points and six boards. De'Ja Wills (Anderson, Ind.-Anderson) and Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth, Ohio-Wadsworth) both chipped in nine points. Ohio's Lauren Hmiel led all scorers with 16 points.
The Eagles scored the first four points of the second half to quickly cut the halftime lead of five to just a point, the closest the Eagles had been in the contest. Ohio then responded with an 11-0 run to push the lead back to 12, 41-29, with 15:23 remaining.
Both teams then went cold offensively, as they combined for just seven points over the seven minutes. Following an Ohio personal foul and technical foul, Tavelyn James hit three-of-four free throws to bring the home team within six, 43-37, with 7:53 to go in the contest.
EMU cut the lead back to five, 46-41, off a pair of Schrock free throws at the 3:56 mark, but the Eagles would not score again. OU rattled off the final six points of the contest to record the win.
After being down 14-4 to start the contest, the Eagles responded with a 10-4 run to pull within four, 18-14, with 8:04 remaining in the first frame. A Redditt lay-in and foul with 6.2 seconds remaining brought the Eagles back within three, but the Bobcats went the length of the floor off the free throw miss for a lay-up to take a 30-25 halftime lead.
Ohio was hot in the first half, shooting 52 percent (13-for-25) compared to 34.5 percent (10-for-29) for EMU. Wills led the Eagles with nine first half points while Redditt chipped in eight.
The Eagles hit the road for their next contest, traveling to Akron, Ohio to take on the University of Akron Zips, Saturday, Feb. 7, at 2 p.m.
