Eagles continue MAC action at NIU Friday

Complete Release (pdf)

YPSILANTI, Mich.-
Riding a two-match winning streak, the Eastern Michigan University wrestling team will continue its way through Mid-American Conference action Friday, Feb. 6, with an evening tilt against Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Ill. Action is set to begin at 7 p.m. Each team will be looking for its first conference win of the 2008-09 campaign.

EAGLES OFF TO DeKALB:
The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team will compete in its first of three straight Mid-American Conference matches Friday, Feb. 6, against Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Ill. at 7 p.m. Each team will be looking for its first conference victory of the season Friday. The Eagles (6-9; 0-2 MAC) are currently riding a two-match winning streak while the Huskies (4-6; 0-3 MAC) have dropped three straight.

The last meeting between these two teams was Feb. 9, 2008 at Bowen Field House, where the Huskies staved off a late Eagle charge to take a 16-15 win.

HOME STRETCH:
Don't look now, but there are only three matches left in the 2008-09 regular season, all of which are conference tilts and all of which have heavy implications for the Eagles and their seed headed into the MAC tournament. As Head Coach Derek DelPorto describes it, his team's main task is nothing less than coming away with a trio of wins and finishing the year 9-9 with a 3-2 conference mark.

“With the parity in our conference this year, everyone is in contention for a top 3 finish,” DelPorto said. “Friday's match with NIU will determine if we will remain in a position to finish in the top three, so we will be doing everything we can to accomplish a victory.”

TWO-BAGGER AT GARDNER-WEBB:
After a narrow yet disappointing 22-20 setback at the hands of Duke University to kick-off the Gardner-Webb Duals Saturday, Jan. 31, EMU roared back to win consecutive matches against Appalachian State and Gardner-Webb, 26-10, and 36-8, respectively. In three tri-dual events this season, the Eagles have compiled a overall record of 5-4 and have gone 2-1 in two of those contests (F.I.T.E Duals and Gardner-Webb Duals).

“PIN”NACLE: Saturday's drubbings of Appalachian State and Gardner-Webb could not have been possible without some major point contributions by Eagle grapplers. In all, five separate Eagles recorded pins on the day including redshirt freshman Jordan McGuire at 125 (38 seconds), redshirt juniors Chris Jenkins at 133 (2:14) and David Pienaar at 141 (39 seconds), as well as redshirt freshman J.J. Johnson at 149 (2:16) and sophomore Derek Foore at 184 (3:58).

Additionally, Johnson earned two technical falls (16-1, 17-2) on the day, while senior Josh Moulton
chipped in with one (15-0).

SIMPLY PERFECT: Redshirt freshman J.J. Johnson and senior Josh Moulton worked their ways to a perfect 3-0 mark Saturday, Jan. 31. Johnson tallied a pin and two technical falls, while Moulton earned a technical fall, decision and major decision. With 16 wins (16-8), Johnson now leads the team in that category. Moulton follows close behind Johnson with a 14-12 record on the season.

Also undefeated on the day were redshirt junior Chris Jenkins and redshirt freshman Tommy St. Louis, who won their lone matches of the event. Jenkins (10-8 overall) pinned Austin Annas of Appalachian State at the 2:14 mark of the 125 lb. bout while St. Louis (8-9 overall) won a thrilling 6-5 overtime decision over Mountaineers' 184-pounder Antionne Jones.

TIME CHANGE:
The Eagles' final home match of the season against Kent State, scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 15, has been moved–once again–from a 6 p.m. to a 4 p.m. start time. This was the original scheduled time for the event. The EMU wrestling team will be competing alongside the women's gymnastics team in the second annual “Beauty and the Beast” combined event.

Just a reminder to check the EMU Athletics website– www.emueagles.com– for all schedule changes!

EMU WRESTLING FAST FACT:
EMU last enjoyed an above .500 MAC regular season mark in the 1990-91 season, when they went 3-2 (11-4 overall). That season, Eagle grapplers wrestled to a third place finish at the MAC Championship.
