ORLANDO, Fla. – The Eastern Michigan University softball team lost a pair of games on the first day of the UCF Invitational, falling to Villanova, 5-1, and then dropping a 10-2 six-inning decision to the University of Maine. Junior Jenny Scherer (Stow, Ohio-Stow-Munroe) hit the 24th home run of her career against Maine, tying her for the all-time mark.

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Eastern Michigan University softball team lost a pair of games on the first day of the UCF Invitational, falling to Villanova, 5-1, and then dropping a 10-2 six-inning decision to the University of Maine. Junior Jenny Scherer (Stow, Ohio-Stow-Munroe) hit the 24th home run of her career against Maine, tying her for the all-time mark.
EMU is now 3-7 on the season. Scherer's round tripper against the Black Bears puts her at 24, tying her with Lauren Clark for the all-time record.
Against the Black Bears, the Eagles fell behind early and could not catch up. EMU was able to put a run on the board in the third inning off a Lauren Delapaz (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton) RBI single to close the gap to 5-1. Scherer then led off the fourth frame with a home run, bringing the Eagles to within three runs. Maine continued to hit well, plating another five runs to end the game in six innings. Jaclyn Caro (Chino, Calif.-St. Lucy's Priory) pitched 3.2 innings, giving up eight runs on eight hits to pick up the loss.
Game one saw Villanova take a 1-0 first-inning lead and never look back en route to the 5-1 victory. Kelsey Green (Burr Oak, Mich.-Burr Oak) went 2-for-2 at the plate, while fellow freshman McKenna Russ (North Canton, Ohio-Hoover) went 2-for-3. Junior Michelle Hletko (Westmont, Ill.-Westmont) was charged with the loss, pitching a complete game while allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits while fanning two batters.
The Eagles continue the UCF Invitational tomorrow, Feb. 28, when they take on Syracuse at 11:30 a.m. and Tennessee State at 4 p.m.
