Eagles end five-match losing skid

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team ended its five-match losing skid Wednesday afternoon, picking up a 5-2 decision against the Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles at the FGCU Tennis Complex.

With the win, the Eagles improve to 3-7 on the season, while FGCU drops to 1-6.

"I was pleased with the all-around effort by everyone,” said head coach Ryan Ray.  “Even in their losses, I feel Miriam and Rumbi played well. This is a good win at the right time for us and now we can keep progressing from here.”

The EMU Eagles jumped out to the early lead, taking the doubles point after winning two doubles matches. Miriam Westerink (Rheden, The Netherlands) and Joanna Woo (Winnipeg, Manitoba) teamed up at the No. 1 doubles flight, defeating Priscillia Villemond and Jen Evans by an 8-3 mark. At the second doubles slot, Xu Chang (Beijing, China) and Karina Ahuja (New Delhi, India) took down Joanne Power and Brittany Wadsworth, 8-3.

With the 1-0 advantage heading into the singles, EMU went into overdrive, winning four out of six singles matches, all in straight sets. At the second flight, Ahuja defeated Evans, losing just three games in the win, 6-2, 6-1. Chang, at the No. 3 slot, had a tight 6-4 first set, but easily took the second, 6-1. Woo was next in the win column, defeating Heather St. John by a 6-3, 6-1 mark. The final win for Eastern came from Marcela Rivero (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) who beat Leah Johnson by a convincing 6-3, 6-2 mark.

Eastern will travel Orlando, Fla. to take on the University of Central Florida Thursday, Feb. 26. The match is set for 2 p.m. at the UCF Tennis Complex.
