Eagles to Face South Florida, Florida Gulf Coast and Central Florida before returning home for Marshall

» 2009 SEASON KICKS OFF: The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team is in its 32nd season. The first season of women's varsity intercollegiate tennis at EMU was 1976-77 under the direction of Lucy Parker. The Eagles went 8-7 that season and finished fifth at the Michigan AIAW Championship.

» WHAT'S ON TAP: The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team will conclude the final three matches of its seven-match road swing. The Eagles will spend their spring break with a tour of Florida Schools, with matches against South Florida (Feb. 23), Florida Gulf Coast (Feb. 25) and Central Florida (Feb. 26), before heading home to Ypsilanti to host Marshall, Feb. 28.

» SCOUTING THE BULLS: South Florida enters the match ranked 69th in the latest ITA Tennis poll (Feb. 23). They come in with a 0-5 overall record, with their latest match, Feb. 22, recording a 6-0 loss to Virginia Commonwealth University. The Bulls are under the direction of head coach Augustin Moreno.

» THE SERIES: This is the seventh meeting between the Eagles and Bulls, dating back to the 1985-86 season in which the Eagles fell 9-0 to South Florida. The Bulls lead the series record, 6-1, with the last meeting between the two teams coming Feb. 29, 2004, when the Eagles edged out the Bulls, 4-3, who were ranked 39th at the time.

» SCOUTING THE EAGLES: The Florida Gulf Coast Eagles enter Wednesday's competition on a five-match losing streak, with a season record of 0-5. The Eagles are coached by Jennifer Gabou and are led by Priscillia Villemond at the No. 1 singles slot.

» THE SERIES: The Eagles and FGCU will meet for the first time Wednesday, Feb. 25.

» SCOUTING THE KNIGHTS: The Knights enter the competition with an overall record of 4-2, with their most recent win coming on Feb. 15, recording a 6-1 win over FGCU. The Knights are led by Elvira Serrot at the No. 1 slot and Andrea Yacaman at the second flight. Yacaman has a 4-1 dual-match record. The Knights are under the direction of Stephanie Nickitas.

» THE SERIES: This will be the ninth meeting between the Eagles and Knights, with the Eagles holding 6-3 series lead, but the Knights have claimed the last three. The last meeting between the two teams came on March 1, 2007, when the Bulls took the 5-2 win.

» SCOUTING THE HERD: Marshall is ranked 54th in the latest ITA Tennis poll and have a 5-5 record entering Saturday's match. The Thundering Herd have face seven ranked opponents this season, including a 5-0 loss to the then-ranked No. 2 University of Georgia on Feb. 2. The Herd are coached by John Mercer and are led by Kellie Schmitt at the No. 1 slot, who has a 8-2 record so for in dual matches this season.

» THE SERIES: This will be the 17th meeting between the Eagles and the Thundering Herd dating back to the 1984-85 season in which the Eagles record an 8-1 decision. Marshall holds the edge in the series,11-6. The series went dry for over 10 years but the two teams renewed the rivalry again during the 1995-96 season, in which the Eagles walked away with the 6-3 win. The last meeting between the two teams came Feb. 19, 2007 in which the Herd swept the Eagles, 7-0. The Herd, a former Mid-American Conference opponent, has won the last eight meetings between the two teams, dating back to the 2001-02 season, in which Marshall defeated Eastern 4-0 in the MAC Championship final. The Eagles' biggest win against Marshall came during the 2000-01 season when EMU edged the Herd 4-3 to take the MAC title and advance to the NCAA Tournament.

» DRY SPELL: The Eagles were swept by both Nebraska and Colorado State, Feb. 13-14.

» LONE WIN: Senior Joanna Woo picked up the Eagles' lone win for the Feb. 6-7 weekend series, defeating Oklahoma State's Maryna Tkachenko in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
