EMU and Winthrop will play again tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.

Box Score.

ROCK HILL, S.C. The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped the back-end of its doubleheader today, Feb. 20, in the Johnny Gill Memorial Tournament, as the Winthrop University Eagles downed the Eagles, 17-9, at Winthrop Ballpark.

Sophomore pitcher Tim Combs (Dayton, Ohio-Wayne) took the loss for EMU, while Matteo D'Angelo picked up the win for Winthrop.

Already behind 2-0 in the top of the fourth, the Eagles would pull within a run, as a leadoff triple by junior Jim Gulliver (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) and single by junior Andrew Marshall (Mason, Mich.-Mason) made it a 2-1 game. Gulliver went 4-for-5 in the loss with three RBI and two runs scored.

The Winthrop offense exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth, including a three-run RBI triple by Tyler McBride, to put EMU down, 7-1.

Down 17-4 in the top of the ninth, the Eagles would make a late attempt at a rally, as a three-run homer by Marshall and RBI singles by Gulliver and sophomore Matt Skirving (Midland, Mich.-H.H. Dow) made it 17-9. Marshall finished 2-for-4 with one run and three RBI, while Skirving tallied two hits and two RBI.

The Eagles will be back in action again tomorrow when they take on Winthrop at 3:30 p.m. Sophomore Jordan Goldschmidt (Ft. Loramie, Ohio-Ft. Loramie) will start on the mound for EMU, while Tyler McBride will likely get the nod for Winthrop.
