ROCK HILL
, S.C.The Eastern Michigan University baseball team fell short today, Feb. 21, in the Johnny Gill Memorial Tournament, as Winthrop University downed the Eagles for the second game in a row, handing EMU an 8-1 loss at Winthrop Ballpark. Sophomore pitcher Jordan Goldschmidt (Ft. Loramie, Ohio-Ft. Loramie) took the loss for EMU, while Robert Lake earned the victory for WU.

The loss drops EMU to 1-2 this season, while Winthrop improves to 3-0 with the win.

The Eagles went ahead early, as a double in the top of the first by sophomore Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley) drove home junior Jim Gulliver (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) who earlier singled, giving EMU a 1-0 advantage. Leonard finished 1-for-4 at the plate with one RBI, while Gulliver notched his third consecutive multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 on the day.

After tying the game in the bottom of the fourth, Winthrop would take a four run lead in the bottom of the sixth, as singles by Kevin Noland and Sean Sullivan and a double by Eddie Tisdale paved the way for a 5-1 advantage. WU would tack on three more runs in the contest to seal the victory and hand EMU the loss.

The Eagles play their final game of the Johnny Gill Memorial Tournament tomorrow when they take on George Washington University at 11 a.m. at Winthrop Ballpark. Freshman pitcher Kendall Lewis (Huntsville, Ohio-Indian Lake) is scheduled to make is first career start on the mound for EMU.
