Eagles take on Ohio in last dual of season
Complete Release (pdf)
YPSILANTI, Mich.- The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team will compete in its final dual of the 2008-09 season Friday, Feb. 20, when it takes on Ohio University in Athens, Ohio at 7 p.m. The Eagles will look to finish the year on a winning note after a tough loss to Kent State over the weekend.
LAST CALL: The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team heads down to Athens, Ohio Friday, Feb. 20, for the final dual of the season against the Ohio University Bobcats at 7 p.m. The Eagles (7-10; 1-3 MAC) will need a win in order to match last season's conference record of 2-3, while the Bobcats (8-8-1; 2-1 MAC) will be fighting for a top conference seed heading into the Mid-American Conference tournament.Last season, the Eagles made quick work of the Bobcats, 31-6, to open up the dual portion of their season, Dec. 6.
TIPPING POINT: Of the four Eagle grapplers who have even records in conference competition this season, three of them –sophomore Nick Hendrick, redshirt freshman J.J. Johnson, and redshirt sophomore David Wade– will get a chance at improving that mark to become the only team members to achieve a winning conference mark this season. Each wrestler currently holds a 2-2 conference record, with Johnson leading all Eagles with a 17-9 overall mark. Hendrick is 4-12 overall, while Wade is 11-9.
The other Eagle with an even conference mark is redshirt freshman Jordan McGuire, who is 1-1 in MAC competition and 7-14 overall.
TOUGH TO SWALLOW: The Green and White are coming off arguably their toughest setback of the season after a 21-13 loss to the hands of the Kent State University Golden Flashes Sunday, Feb. 15, at Bowen Field House. EMU jumped out to an early 6-0 lead thanks to consecutive decisions by redshirt sophomore Nick Hendrick and senior Don Funk at 165 and 174, respectively.
The Flashes abruptly turned the tables, however, starting with a pin of sophomore Derek Foore at the 5:37 mark of the 184 lb. match. KSU would go on to win four of the remaining six matches and silence the home crowd in the process. A win against the Flashes would have given the Eagles their first win against a ranked opponent this season (0-5).
COMEBACK KIDS: EMU fans and wrestlers were not the only ones disappointed by the outcome of Sunday's match. Third year Head Coach Derek DelPorto felt the sting of defeat as well and knows how critical a solid rebound performance can be.
“Kent State was a tough loss for us because the door was wide open to beat the No. 14 team in the country and a conference foe and we did not captialize,” DelPorto said. “Friday is a must win match for us. I hope these guys are ready to step up and finish the dual season with a win!”
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING: Through 17 duals this season, EMU grapplers have combined for an overall individual record of 200-228 and a conference mark of 13-27. The lower five weight classes (125-157) have accounted for 124 victories, while the upper five (165-HWT) have tallied 76.
MAC TOURNEY RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER: Eastern Michigan University will play host to the 2009 Mid-American Conference Wrestling Championship Saturday and Sunday, March 7-8, at the Convocation Center. The Eagles will look to bring home their first MAC title since the 1995-96 campaign.
Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by calling the Convocation Ticket Office at 734.487.2282. They will also be available at the entrance.
LAST YEAR'S MAC PLACEWINNERS: Three Eagles earned top four finishes at last year's MAC Championship. Andrew Novak took second place at 125 and posted a 2-1 record. Heavyweight David Wade battled his way to a fourth place finish and a 4-1 mark. Finally, 2008 graduate Charlie Pienaar posted a 1-1 record and claimed second place at 184. Pienaar went on to wrestle in the NCAA Championships.
EMU WRESTLING FAST FACT: The Eagles have had 22 placewinners this decade including one first place finisher, Jermain Thompson, in the 2006-07 campaign.
