POCKET THREES:
The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team will travel Oak Lawn, Ill. Saturday, Dec. 12, to compete in the F.I.T.E. Duals. At the event, EMU will battle No. 13 ranked Indiana University, Calumet College and the University of Southern Illinois at Edwardsville beginning at 11 a.m.

F.I.T.E. DUALS HISTORY: Saturday's F.I.T.E. Duals will mark the third time in the last four years that EMU will compete in the event. The Eagles have compiled a 3-2 record at the competition since the 2006-07 campaign, which includes a 2-1 mark in the 2008-09 edition. Last season, the Eagles recorded victories over Harper College (40-6) and the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater (31-12), and lost to Indiana (31-6).

GOTTA START SOMEWHERE: The Eagles are 0-7 all-time against IU dating back to Dec. 16, 1967, when the Hoosiers topped EMU, 24-10. The closest the Eagles ever came to a win against the Big Ten Conference powerhouse was in 2004, when IU nipped the Eagles, 20-17, in Bloomington, Ind.

EMU will get another crack at the Hoosiers Saturday, which will mark its third consecutive match against a Big Ten opponent. “Indiana is probably the best overall team we have seen so far and we have our work cut out for us,” said Head Coach Derek DelPorto. “We are looking to improve on our performance from last Thursday and keep moving positively forward.”

BACK TO CLEVELAND: Following Saturday's F.I.T.E. Duals, the Eagles will wrap-up a busy weekend on the road at the Cleveland State Open Sunday, Dec. 13. This will be EMU's second trip to Cleveland this season, having previously knocked-off Cleveland State University, 36-6, in a dual meet, Nov. 19.

“This is the last Open of the semester for us and it's going to be good to gauge our freshmen who have been in the freshman and sophomore division of the Opens so far,” said Head Coach Derek DelPorto.“

At last season's Open, nine EMU wrestlers earned top five finishes including Andrew Novak and Justin Brandel, who took home first place honors in their respective weight classes.

WAKE UP CALL: Head Coach Derek DelPorto's squad is coming off a disappointing home performance, Dec. 3, against Michigan State University. The Spartans rolled past the Eagles, 26-9, at Bowen Field House to extend their winning streak over EMU to 11 matches dating back to 1994.

“The MSU Dual was a wake up call for our coaching staff,” said DelPorto.  “We have been doing a great job getting our guys tired but we weren't pushing past the breaking point.  This is where you get tough and we didn't do that.  We are going to focus on our endurance and make sure we are the best conditioned team on the mat.”

FIRST IMPRESSION: True freshman Phillip Joseph's first regular season match of his collegiate career was one that he will not soon forget. Joseph got the nod at 184 lbs. against MSU's Nick Palmieri, Dec. 3, and needed just one minute and 27 seconds to pin his opponent and bring the home crowd to its feet.

Joseph is now 1-0 in dual competition this season and 9-4 overall, which is good for second-most wins on the team (true freshman Nick Whitenburg is 11-1 in unattached action).

OVER THE HILLS AND FAR AWAY: The Green and White will now spend more than a month on the road beginning with Saturday's F.I.T.E. Duals. A set of tournaments follow, including the Cleveland State Open, Dec. 13, and the Reno Tournament of Champions, Dec. 20. The Eagles open the new year at Seton Hill, Jan. 8, and travel to the Pitt Quad, Jan. 9.
