MARKETING IDOL EVENT SET FOR SATURDAY: There will be creativity, energy and teamwork on display on the hard-court floor Dec. 12 at the Convocation Center, but with a twist: The marketing game plans will be coming from business students at Eastern Michigan University.
In a special blend of basketball and business, students will present their marketing plans for promoting Eastern Michigan University men's and women's hoops in a Marketing Idol competition patterned after the popular American Idol TV talent show.
In the best “Idol” tradition, a panel of EMU celebrity judges will critique the ten-minute presentations of five teams of students that have worked together this semester to design marketing plans. The students have developed their strategies as part of a sports marketing class in the EMU College of Business.
Funding for the class and the Marketing Idol event was provided through a generous donation from the E-Hoops Group (EHG), the official support organization for EMU men's and women's basketball. The intent of the partnership between the College of Business and the EHG is to increase awareness and attendance for EMU men's and women's basketball.
The practice gym in the Convocation Center will be set up with a TV-style stage, including theater-style lighting, video and sound, to create a true Idol atmosphere with a cheering audience. The Marketing Idol competition will run from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the practice gym. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m.
Those who attend the Marketing Idol event will receive a free box lunch, an E-Hoops Group T-shirt and a game ticket. You also get the chance to cheer, watch the EMU students present their ideas, and vote to select the winning teams.
EMU students, faculty, and staff who pre-register for the event and then attend will also receive a free EMU Bookstore/dining gift card valued at $25. To pre-register, call the EMU Ticket Office at 734.487.2282, or stop by the box offices at the Convocation Center or Student Center.

CHECKING THE SERIES WITH JAMES MADISON: EMU and James Madison University will be meeting for the first time Saturday, Dec. 12.

MEDLOCK NAMED MAC WEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK: EMU senior point guard Carlos Medlock (Detroit, Mich.-Murray Wright) was named Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week, Nov. 30, after leading the Eagles to two wins last week.Medlock helped the Eagles win an 86-76 non-conference game at Southeast Missouri State University, Nov. 28, and followed that up with a great overall performance in a come-from-behind 76-66 non-conference win over Davenport University, Nov. 30.
Against SEMO, Medlock scored seven points with eight assists and six rebounds. He followed that effort up with a career-best 32 points to go along with four rebounds, four steals and four assists in the win over Davenport.
Trailing by six, 66-60, with just 3:30 left in the Davenport game, Medlock took over for the Eagles, scoring 10 of EMU's 16 points down the stretch to pull off the victory.
Medlock connected on 8-of-15 field goals, 5-of-10 three-point attempts, and 11-of-12 free throws against Davenport. His 32 points was not only a personal best, but was also the 11th best single-game scoring effort in the Convocation Center.

BOWDRY EARNS SECOND MAC AWARD OF THE SEASON: EMU redshirt junior forward Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) has been named the Mid-American Conference men's basketball West Division Player of the Week for Dec. 6. Bowdry also won the award for the week ending Nov. 15.
The 6-foot-6 Bowdry averaged 21 points and eight rebounds in two outstanding performances last week as the Eagles went 1-1.
At home against Canisius, Nov. 30, Bowdry scored 18 points with eight rebounds and four assists to lead the Eagles to a 75-58 win. He connected on 6-of-11 field goals and 6-of-9 free throws in that victory.
Eastern traveled to Columbus, Ohio Saturday, Dec. 5, for a battle with the 15th ranked Buckyes of Ohio State University. Bowdry was in foul trouble in the first half, playing just seven minutes without a point or rebound.
He made up for that first-half drought, however, scoring 24 points with 10 rebounds in the second half. He connected on 10-of-13 field goals, made his only three-point shot, and was 3-of-5 from the line in the loss to the Buckeyes. The double-double was the 11th of his career.

FIRST FOR A CENTURY SINCE 2003: When EMU gave up more than 100 points in the 111-60 loss at Ohio State, Dec. 5, it marked the first time that the Eagles allowed 100+ points since a 106-89 defeat at Central Michigan, March 1, 2003.

11th DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR BOWDRY: Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) turned in the 11th double-double of his 72-game EMU career with 24 points and 10 rebounds, all in the second half, at Ohio State, Dec. 5.
