YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Early three-point baskets from Eastern Michigan University's Jay Higgins (Fayetteville, N.C.-IMG Academy-Hillsborough (Fla.) C.C.), Carlos Medlock (Detroit, Mich. Murray Wright) and Antonio Green (Inkster, Mich.-Robichaud) set the tone for the Eagles, as they capitalized on a fast start en route to a 75-64 win over the visiting James Madison University Dukes Saturday night, Dec. 12, here in the Convocation Center.
The Eagles held a slim, 32-29, halftime lead and out-scored the visitors, 43-35, in the second half with the one-two punch of Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) and Medlock finishing with 20 points each. Bowdry ended the game with the 12th double-double of his career with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Green also had a double-figure scoring effort for EMU as he finished with 15 points.
Bowdry quickly made his presence felt in the second half as well, coming out of intermission with two quick layups to help swell Eastern's advantage. The lead would not last long for the Eagles as a seesaw battle ensued for much of the second half.
The Eagles found themselves down 53-50 with nearly 10 minutes left in the contest, but a 7-0 run, including a Green three-pointer, two Jamell Harris (Euclid, Ohio-Euclid) free throws and a two-handed dunk by junior wing Will Cooper (Detroit, Mich.-Pershing (Bridgton (Maine) Academy) put EMU ahead 57-53.
Bowdry and Medlock, both picked as preseason All-Mid-American Conference first teamers, continued to provide fire power for the Eagles.
Julius Wells led the Dukes with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while 6-foot 10-inch junior forward Denzel Bowles, playing his first game for the Dukes after transferring from Texas A&M, added 14 points and five caroms for JMU.
The win moves the Eagles to 6-3 on the season, the team's best start under Head Coach Charles Ramsey, while JMU evens its record at 4-4.
The Eagles will now take a one week break before heading to Atlanta, Ga. to take on Georgia State University Dec. 19. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
