DETROIT, Mich. Eastern Michigan improves to 6-2 on the young season, while Detroit drops its fifth straight to fall to 1-5.
Behind James, sophomore forward Paige Redditt (Kansas City, Mo.-Belton) powered in 14 points and freshman Chenise Miller (Oak Park, Mich.-West Bloomfield) added eight points and eight rebounds to key the EMU offensive attack. Junior Kristin Thomas (Winter Park, Fla.-Edgewater-Hillsborough C.C.) was a rebounding machine, hauling down 10 boards, as the Eagles grabbed 50 on the evening. Junior guard Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth,Ohio-Wadsworth) finished with eight assists, five points and five rebounds in another great all-around effort.
Detroit was paced with 22 points by Demesisha Fambro to go along with a 19 points and 13 rebound effort by Yar Shayok.
The Green and White shot 39.1 percent (25-of-64) for the contest, including drilling eight treys, compared to just 32.4 percent (22-of-68) for the Titans. Both sides turned the ball over 21 times, but it was the Eagles notching a 21-6 edge in points off turnovers.
Out of the gate it was all James for EMU, scoring the first eight points of the contest to jump out to the 8-2 margin with 17:22 to go in the first half. UDM bounced back though to knot the score at 11 on a Fambro fast break lay-up at the 9:54 mark.
However, Eastern would respond with a 26-8 run to close the half and take a 37-19 lead into the lockerroom at the break. Ten of the Eagles' 26 points during the run came off the hand of the hot-shooting James, who finished the stanza with 18.
Following the break, things continued to fall in favor of EMU, as the margin grew to as many as 23, 58-35, with 9:51 to go via a Reddit layup off the Schrock dish.
The Eastern advantage would linger around 20, before UDM would cut to within 15 points on a Brigid Milroy jumper in the lane with 55 ticks to go in the contest.
Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert and crew have one final tune-up before taking a break for final exams Wednesday, Dec. 9, when Rochester College invades the Convocation Center.
