Women's Hoops Team Cruises to Exhibition Win Over Madonna

Eagles rally from slow start to record 84-36 victory

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team came back from a slow start to cruise to an 84-36 non-conference exhibition game win over Madonna University here Saturday, Nov. 7, in the Convocation Center.
Sophomore guard Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) led three Eagles in double figures with 20 points while juniors Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth, Ohio-Wadsworth) and Sydney Huntley-Rogers (Cincinnati, Ohio-Purcell Marian) added 10 each. Sophomore Paige Redditt (Kansas City-Belton) led all rebounders with 10 while scoring nine points.
Madonna was led by Kaylee McGrath with 12 points.
The Eagles held a commanding 42-25 advantage on the boards while hitting 33-of-65 field goals for 50.8 percent shooting. Defensively, Eastern held Madonna to just 13-of-44 from the field for 29.5 percent.
Both teams started sluggishly before Madonna's Tabatha Wydryck put the visitors on the board first on a three-point field goal at the 18:08 mark.
Madonna kept the lead for the first eight minutes of the game before a James triple tied the game at 11-11 at the 12:15 mark. Eastern out-scored the visitors, 28-8, the rest of the stanza for a 39-19 halftime advantage.
James led the Eagles in scoring in the first half with 15 points while Redditt hauled down six boards in the first 20 minutes.
The Eagles opened the second half with five straight points from Redditt and increased its lead to 27, 48-21, with 16 minutes left in the game and the home squad went on to roll to the 48-point win.
Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert's Eagles are scheduled to open the 2009-10 regular season Friday, Nov. 13, at the University of Illinois-Chicago.
