EMU puts three match unbeaten streak on the line against MSU

Complete Release (.pdf)

THURSDAY NIGHT THROWDOWN:
The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team will look to keep its three match unbeaten streak intact when it hosts a second-straight Big Ten Conference opponent in Michigan State University Thursday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m., inside Bowen Field House.

The Eagles will be closing out a two-bout homestand against an MSU squad which nipped the Eagles last season, 18-15, at Bowen, Dec. 5., 2008. The match was highlighted by a J.J. Johnson pin of Tim Hammer in the 149 lbs. bout.

LUCKY 13: The Eagles and Spartans will be meeting for the 13th time dating back to Dec. 17, 1976. MSU holds an 11-1 record in the all-time series with the lone EMU victory coming in second-ever match between the two schools, Jan. 21, 1987. The Eagles won that match 23-19, but have since lost 10 straight meetings to the Spartans dating back to 1994.

NOT JUST ANOTHER MATCH: Thursday's matchup with the Spartans is about more than just winning and losing. It is a chance to gain recognition on both a state and national level by beating a formidable in-state opponent.

“An obvious in-state rivalry comes into play with recruiting and some other variables that allow us to gain respect in this state,” said Head Coach Derek DelPorto. “We are still trying to prove that EMU can be competitive with anyone in the country but especially here in Michigan. Central Michigan is the team to beat in this state and we are working hard to become that team.”

JOINING THE RANKS: Senior Chris Jenkins has been awarded the No. 18 ranking at 125 lbs. in the InterMat national poll for the week of Dec. 1. Jenkins owns a 6-2 season record following a 4-0 shutout performance against Northwestern University's Bobby Joyce, Nov. 22.

“Being ranked in the top 20 is big for Chris's confidence,” said Head Coach Derek DelPorto. “I am happy that he has bounced out to a good start, but he must continue his winning ways in order to remain ranked.”

DelPorto also believes Jenkins's recognition will allow other members of the EMU squad to gain national notoriety. “Eastern Michigan's representation in the national rankings will allow our other guys to be on the radar of the ranking committees,” DelPorto remarked.

MEAN STREAK: EMU is currently riding a three match unbeaten streak (2-0-1) which began with a 25-24 victory over St. Cloud State University, Nov. 14. The Green and White made it two wins in a row with a 36-6 blowout over Cleveland State University, Nov. 19. On Nov. 22, the Eagles nearly upset Northwestern University but instead came away with an 18-18 tie.

A win Thursday would give the Eagles their longest unbeaten streak since the 2006-07 season, when they won four straight bouts including a 56-0 drubbing of Wagner College.

BUSINESS TRIP: The Green and White will not return to Ypsilanti until 2010, when it hosts Clarion University, Jan. 15, at the Convocation Center. The Eagles will spend the over a month on the road beginning with the F.I.T.E. Duals, Dec. 12. A set of tournaments follow including Cleveland State Open, Dec. 14, and the Reno Tournament of Champions, Dec. 20. The Eagles open the new year at Seton Hill, Jan. 8, and travel to the Pitt Quad, Jan. 9.

NOT DONE WITH THE BIG TEN: The Eagles will face a third straight opponent from the Big Ten Conference when they meet up with Indiana University Saturday, Dec. 12, at the F.I.T.E. Duals. The Hoosiers bested EMU at last year's event, 31-6.
