YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team scored the game's first basket and never trailed on the way to a 75-58 non-conference win over Canisius College here Monday, Nov. 30, in the Convocation Center.
The win was the third straight for the Eagles as they improve to 5-2 on the season. The loss broke a three-game Canisius winning streak and leaves the Griffins at 3-2 on the year.
Junior Jay Higgins (Fayetteville, N.C.-IMG Academy-Hillsborough (Fla.) J.C.) led the Eagles with 25 points while redshirt junior Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) added 18 points and eight rebounds. Senior guard Carlos Medlock (Detroit, Mich.-Murray Wright) scored 12 with eight assists.
Canisius was led by Greg Logans with 18 while Frank Turner added 12 and Elton Frazier scored 11.
The Eagles shot 49 percent (24-of-49) from the field while holding the visiting Griffins to 36.8 percent (21-of-57). Eastern also held a slim, 37-34, edge on the boards.
Medlock got the Eagles started with a long three-point field goal to open the game and Eastern quickly built the lead to double figures, taking a 22-11 edge at the 13:40 mark on a triple by Higgins.
From there the Eagles boosted their advantage to 20, 39-19, at the 5:33 mark on a layup by Quintin Dailey (Las Vegas, Nev.-Bishop Gorman-Sheridan (Wyo.) J.C.).
Eastern closed out the half on two free throws by Jamell Harris (Euclid, Ohio-Euclid) for a 46-25 lead at intermission.
Higgins led the Eagles in the first half with 17, including making 5-of-7 three-point field goals. Bowdry added 12 for the Eagles, who shot 61.5 percent from the field (16-of-26) and 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from beyond the arc. The EMU defense held the visitors to just 36.7 percent (11-of-30) from the field in the first 20 minutes.
The Griffins opened the second half with two quick buckets to cut EMU's lead to 17, 46-29, at the 19:11 mark, but the Eagles came right back with two baskets of their own to keep the lead at 21, 50-29.
Canisius managed to chip away at the Eagles' lead, trimming it to 12, 64-52, with 6:51 left on a layup by Turner, but once again EMU withstood challenge, building the lead back to 15, 69-54, on two free throws by Antonio Green (Inkster, Mich.-Dearborn Heights Robichaud) with 5:02 left in the game.
From that point on the Eagles kept the lead in double figures to roll to their third straight win.
The Eagles will be idle until Saturday, Dec. 5, when they travel to Columbus, Ohio for a noon ESPNU game against Ohio State.
