YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — A dramatic second-half comeback sparked the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball to a thrilling 76-66 win over a visiting Davenport University team here Saturday, Nov. 28, in the Convocation Center in an afternoon non-conference game.
Eastern, now 4-2 on the year, trailed, 66-60, with 3:26 left in the game, the Eagles went on a tear to score the game's final 16 points on the way to the 10-point win. Senior guard Carlos Medlock (Detroit, Mich.-Murray Wright) scored a career-high 32 points, the 11th best single-game effort in the Convocation Center. Medlock also accounted for 10 of the final 16 EMU points. Redshirt junior forward Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) turned in the 10th double-double of his career, scoring 21 points with 15 rebounds.
Davenport, now 7-1 on the year, was led by junior forward Nathan Cox who scored 26 points and added six rebounds. Teammate Mario Scott added eight points.
The Eagles raced out to an early 10-5 lead, with Matt Balkema (Warren, Mich.-Cousino) hitting a jumper at the 17:36 mark of the first half.
The Eagles managed to take a 21-20 lead at the 11:12 mark on a layup by Kamil Janton (Tarnow, Poland-Bartlett (Ill.), but the Panthers went on a 9-0 run to take a 29-21 lead with 7:17 remaining in the half.
Davenport managed to keep its lead through the rest of the half, leading 34-29 at intermission. Cox led the Panthers in scoring in the first half with 17 while Bowdry led the Eagles with nine points and 10 rebounds.
Eastern shot just 36.1 percent, 13-of-36, from the field in the first half and out-rebounded the visitors, 22-20. Davenport connected on 13-of-32 shot for 40.6 percent.
Davenport built its second-half lead to as much as seven, 54-47, with 10:43 left before the Eagles made a dramatic comeback.
The Eagles fought back to tie the game at 60-all on a three-pointer by Medlock, but a cold streak hurt the home team and Davenport went back up by four, 64-60, with 5:30 left when David Thompson scored on a driving layup.
After Davenport had increased its advantage to six, 66-60, Bowdry hit a layup followed by a triple from Medlock to pull the Eagles within one, 66-65.
Medlock then gave the Eagles their first lead since the 11:12 mark of the first half when he connected on two charity tosses for a 67-66 EMU advantage with 2:07 left in the game.
Senior forward Will Cooper (Detroit, Mich.-Pershing-Brigton Academy) added two free throws to make it 69-66 and from that point the Eagles capatilized on 11-of-12 free throws and some great defensive efforts, to preserve the win.
