Phillips and Wade topple nationally ranked opponents
EVANSTON, Ill. (EMUEagles.com)—The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team competed in its first set of dual matches here Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Northwestern Duals. The Eagles dropped the opener to the University of Northern Iowa, 22-12, but bounced back to edge St. Cloud State University 25-24, in the second and final dual.
The split earns the Eagles a 1-1 record on the young season.
The heavyweights kicked off the action between EMU and Northern Iowa, where senior David Wade (Beavercreek, Ohio-Beavercreek) gave the Eagles an early 3-0 lead thanks to an impressive 1-0 shutout of No. 11 ranked Christian Brantley.
Following 7-2 setback for senior Chris Jenkins (Tecumseh, Mich.-Tecumseh) at 125 lbs., sophomores Andrew Novak (New Boston, Mich.-Huron) (133 lbs.), Corey Phillips (Canton, Mich.-Canton) (141 lbs.) and J.J. Johnson (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford) (149 lbs.) each recorded decisions to put the Eagles ahead, 12-3. Novak and Ryan Jauch needed overtime to decide their match, where Novak pulled off a 5-3 win. Phillips won a 13-11 shootout over nationally-ranked Trent Washington at 141 lbs., while Johnson took care of Tyson Reiner with a late third period takedown, 4-2, at 149 lbs.
It would be all downhill for the Eagles from that point on, however, as the Panthers took the final five matches to make the final score 22-12 for Northern Iowa.
Looking to even things up in the second bout against St. Cloud State, the Green and White stormed out to a 22-9 lead through six matches. Jenkins put the Eagles ahead, 6-3, with a pin of Trent Herold at the 1:03 mark of the 125 lbs. match.
With St. Cloud State up 9-6, Phillips won by forfeit at 141 lbs to tie the score at nine. Johnson then notched a crucial six points for his second victory of the day at 149 lbs., when he pinned Jacob Roberts at the 1:44 mark to give EMU an 18-9 lead. Sophomore Aaron Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio-Holy Name) then turned in his first victory on the day with major decision over John Sungren, 11-3.
Leading 22-9, the Eagles appeared to be in control until Tad Merritt cut the lead to 22-15 with a pin of sophomore Lester France (Flat Rock, Mich.-Flat Rock) at 4:13 of the 165 lbs. bout. Justin Brandel (Saginaw, Mich.-Swan Valley) then came to the rescue with an 11-5 decision over Shamus O'Grady at 174 lbs to extend the lead to 25-15.
Despite a decision and pin for St. Cloud State in the final two matches, its deficit proved to be too large as the Eagles prevailed, 25-24, for their first win of the season.
The Eagles will be in action Sunday, Nov. 15, at the annual Michigan State Open in East Lansing, Mich.
