Brandel, Lewis and Wade record pins in blowout of Cleveland State
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — A great start ended with an even better final result as the Eastern Michigan University wrestling team claimed victory eight of 10 matches Thursday evening, Nov. 19, to roll past Cleveland State University, 36-6. The Eagles stormed out to a 36-0 lead, helped in large part by pins from seniors Justin Brandel (Saginaw, Mich.-Swan Valley), Josh Lewis (West Liberty, Ohio-Salem) and David Wade (Beavercreek, Ohio-Beavercreek), before surrendering a point against.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Vikings fall to 0-1.
Lewis made an early statement for the Eagles in the 197 lbs. match with a pin of Gahad Suleiman at the 1:29 mark to put the Eagles on top, 6-0. Wade followed Lewis's performance with a pin of his own at the 2:56 mark of the heavyweight bout to make it a 12-0 EMU advantage.
Then at 125 lbs., sophomore Gregory Egbert (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Ypsilanti) earned his first collegiate dual victory with a 6-2 decision over Zachary Zupancic.
Following Egbert was sophomore Andrew Novak (New Boston, Mich.-New Boston) who claimed an 11-2 major decision at 133 lbs. Sophomores Frank Sade (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Norway) (141 lbs.) and J.J. Johnson (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford) (149 lbs.), also recorded major decisions in their respective bouts to put a stranglehold on the Vikings, 27-0, after six matches. Sade defeated Ronald Butler, 11-1, while Johnson topped Dan Castillo, 14-1.
In the 157 lbs. match, freshman Aaron Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio-Holy Name) kept the Eagles' winning ways in tact with a 6-2 decision over Corey Carlo. Sulzer trailed after one period, but used two near-fall points, a takedown and two riding points to give the Eagles their seventh straight win of the evening and a 30-0 lead.
Brandel turned-in the final six points of the night for the Eagles with a pin of Dustin Doty at the 2:21 mark of the 165 lbs. match. The Eagles took a 36-0 lead.
The Vikings got on the board late as Marcus Effner bested junior Nick Hendrick (Columbia, Mich.-Powers Catholic), 3-1, at 174 lbs., and Nick Anthony edged freshman Travis Stanback (Solon, Ohio-Solon), 1-0, at 184 lbs. The two victories by CSU only put a dent in the final score, 36-6, in favor of the Eagles.
The Eagles accumulated over 20 minutes of riding time en route to their biggest win since a 40-6 drubbing of Harper College, Dec. 21, 2008.
The Eagles return to Bowen Field House for their first home match of the season Sunday, Nov. 22, against Big Ten Conference foe Northwestern University. Action is slated for 2 p.m.
